Share Your Sheltering-in-Place Accomplishments
Let’s celebrate small victories and say how we’ve managed to pass the time at home
It’s been a tough few months. But sheltering in place has had a few silver linings. There’s been increased kindness among neighbors, new hobbies discovered and lots of creativity fueled by finding ways to keep kids occupied. Now it’s time to celebrate the little things we’ve accomplished during this time.
For me, it was finishing a challenging 1,000-piece puzzle and mastering the most delicious grilled cheese sandwich in the world. I finally used up all of the fun cards I’ve collected over the years by reaching out to long-lost friends through the U.S. Postal Service. And I read half a book on feng shui, improved the chi in just one room and then promptly misplaced the book. Clearly I need some inspiration from the Houzz community to get things back on track! Let’s all share what we’ve accomplished during the time spent at home. No accomplishment is too small to mention.

Activities
Of course, sheltering in place while working, trying to navigate financial assistance packages, helping kids with at-home school and making meals left many people with less free time than usual. But even so, it has made us take a look at screen time and rediscover other home activities. Did you finally read a book that had been collecting dust? Master a new app in order to virtually reconnect with loved ones? Bring out that long-neglected stack of board games and become a Boggle master?
Please share at-home activities you’ve discovered or rediscovered you enjoy while spending so much time at home.

Helping
It was inspiring to see so many people sewing masks for or donating masks they already had to frontline workers during the COVID-19 crisis. Others have turned their Little Free Libraries into Little Free Food Banks. Have you found ways to help others during this time?

Crafts
Have you or your kids tried any new craft projects you’d always wanted to do? A friend of mine recently sent me an envelope full of God’s eyes. With six kids at home, their household had way too many of them.

Cooking
Have you found new ways to prepare and enjoy meals, tried new recipes or given everyone in the family more meal setup and prep responsibilities? Or perhaps started a garden to grow some of your own food? How are you handling preparing so many meals at home?

Community
Have you interacted more with neighbors more than you usually would when you’re out and about? On my birthday, a few friends stopped by and we socially distanced by sitting 10 feet apart in the front yard. I think I talked to more neighbors in those few hours than I ever had in the 13 years I’ve lived in this house. And I’ve never exchanged as many smiles and waves with fellow walkers and joggers as I have when doing a little do-si-do to decide which one of us is going to go 6 feet out into the street.

Tell us: Please share what you’ve accomplished during this weird time. No victory is too small! Let’s celebrate them in the Comments.
Lots of people have been cleaning out closets — so many that at one point some donation centers were overwhelmed. Back in March, I thought my home would be perfectly organized by now, but I ran out of steam after two junk drawers and haven’t even swapped out the winter clothing for summer clothing in my closet yet.
Please inspire people like me by sharing your organizing accomplishments in the Comments. Show off your work by including photos of the final results.
