At the investment group last night, said that I had onl.y 4 hours left to enjoy being 84 ... ... and, they didn't even sing "Happy birthday ... " to me ... ... plus, at the after-meeting for a few to continue the discussion at the arches fast food place, after ... I had to buy my own coffee! As for that candle on the cupcake at the ROMEOs last week, that I held at arm's length ... I did get it blown out! To some merriment ... who thought that there was a blow-hard ... in this august group! 'Twould be quite a job - to get 85 candles on a cupcake: wall-to-wall fire, right! The temp. around here is warmer today - about 20 F. I goofed, earlier - drove right by the licence renewal place and forgot the need to go in. Looking for another place in the city at present. Took the cupcake to son's place. His lady had forgotten about it, or would have made a cake ... but when she heard of it ... made one. So ... the cupcake came home - intact. Ham, pineapple and mango for dinner ... yummm! And ... it appears that I may be getting my computer back, fairly soon. Had a discussion with a nearby guy who does a lot of investing the other day - he uses satellite for internet. Maybe I'll have to spring for that. As we used to kid old uncle ..." you can't take it with you". Surprising result of my birthday commentary here ... scarcely any mention of the failing elastic in the nice pants! Maybe they just don't want to encourage me. ole joyful

Ava, after that no-start on the nearby road a couple of weeks ago, I wondered whether it should have more reserve power and asked my garage man about it. He said that it should have had more reserve and that I need a new battery. It wouldn't start one morning about ten days ago, I couldn't find my charger till later when I'd put on warmer clothes. It's worked fine since but the past couple of days the temp has been around 0 (18 below, Celsius), so I gave it a few hours trickle charge last night and a few hours again this evening. If it gets close to discharge in this cold weather, the weakened acid may well freeze, and split it. Not desirable. I think that I've had this charger for about 40 years and doubt that I've used it more than a dozen/(two dozen?) times. Can't exactly accuse it of bring lazy, for it's been ready to work when called upon. I've been wondering about giving some neighbours and friends my phone number, saying that if they lack roadside emergency service or an available boost, if their battery's low and there's an electric plug within a hundred feet, I may well be able to come give them a charge - or a boost: I got some mid-range jumper cables about the same time that I got the charger. Sometimes I may have to beg off as being busy, but often not. ole joyfuelled

Card came from niece in Swan Hills, Alberta, yesterday ...

... delayed opening it till after midnight.

Daughter called.

Going out to dinner with son and partner tomorrow evening.

Yackin' with you folks today could be called something of a birthday blessing.

As I said in my Christmas message (that appeared here) when one gets old (and, for many, are downsizing) who - needs - more - stuff??!!

Temperature about 45 F. today (but to get cold again overnight). Sometimes when I see folks going from car to market in weather like this, I say that if they're in charge of ordering weather ... they can keep doing this till March, if they like: usually causes a smile and, often, a reply in kind.

Investment group of about 18 met last night ... I announced birthday ... they didn't sing ... I was a bit disappointed.

Last week at men's coffee hour at the church (the Old Farts' club) they gave each of us birthday-boys-in-January a cupcake with candle.

I held mine at arm's length ... blew it out.

Thought it'd cause some fun if I succeeded (it did) ... and some if I didn't ...

... so thought it worth the gamble.

Tried to explain to son how to get to the restaurant that I'd suggested, and, as his partner is somewhat directionally disenfranchised, and I couldn't give him a street address, we met at her workplace just after five (after I made the recent post) and headed for the restaurant, along some rather rural roads ... amid some (light) discussion that they had restaruants closer, in town.

Anyway, we made the one where the Old Farts from church take their wives for lunch just before their summer break.

Not many in the dining room part of the establishment, and son blew me up a multi-balloon hat to celebrate (he does this for kids at fairs, festivals, etc.).

Visited a table where a couple of middle-aged ladies had settled, asking whether they thought my hat might indicate that I was nearing second childhood.

We were about ten miles from where I live, and after a bit of banter, one lady looked at me and said that she thought that my name was XXXXXX, wasn't it ... and I said that I had to plead quilty to the charge.

She, who lives on a farm a couple of miles from me, was daughter-in-law to one of Dad's cousins ... and visited my first cousin's home frequently, over a number of years, as housekeeper for his disadvantaged wife, a few years ago ... we've met a couple of times, I think.

Her husband died (of cancer?) a few months ago, and I commisserated with her about that. The other lady had lived near her, her husband took his own life a few years ago, and she'd moved to the city. I'd been friends with the older generation of that family: her father-in-law was a friend to the whole community.

As we were leaving, I said to the first lady that she'd had a late-teen son who'd had a battle with cancer several years ago (I'd visited their home at the time) and I wondered how that had turned out.

It seems that he was in remission for ten years ... but recently it has returned ... with a vengeance ... and he was just in the middle of getting a transplant at that time.

So I offered my good wishes for all of them and offered to say some prayers on their behalf.

One never knows what may show up around the next bend in the road.

Sometimes some little thing that one does, often at the spur of the moment, turns out much differently than one could have anticipated.

On Sunday evening, en route home, I dropped in to the lady's farm home, nearby.

She'd just arrived home from spending the day with her son in the hospital, following the transplant.

He's coping with a very high fever, and may have been for a while.

I ask for your good thoughts and hopes, plus some prayers offered on the part of those of you who do that, for the young man and his family.
