Comments (36)Tried to explain to son how to get to the restaurant that I'd suggested, and, as his partner is somewhat directionally disenfranchised, and I couldn't give him a street address, we met at her workplace just after five (after I made the recent post) and headed for the restaurant, along some rather rural roads ... amid some (light) discussion that they had restaruants closer, in town. Anyway, we made the one where the Old Farts from church take their wives for lunch just before their summer break. Not many in the dining room part of the establishment, and son blew me up a multi-balloon hat to celebrate (he does this for kids at fairs, festivals, etc.). Visited a table where a couple of middle-aged ladies had settled, asking whether they thought my hat might indicate that I was nearing second childhood. We were about ten miles from where I live, and after a bit of banter, one lady looked at me and said that she thought that my name was XXXXXX, wasn't it ... and I said that I had to plead quilty to the charge. She, who lives on a farm a couple of miles from me, was daughter-in-law to one of Dad's cousins ... and visited my first cousin's home frequently, over a number of years, as housekeeper for his disadvantaged wife, a few years ago ... we've met a couple of times, I think. Her husband died (of cancer?) a few months ago, and I commisserated with her about that. The other lady had lived near her, her husband took his own life a few years ago, and she'd moved to the city. I'd been friends with the older generation of that family: her father-in-law was a friend to the whole community. As we were leaving, I said to the first lady that she'd had a late-teen son who'd had a battle with cancer several years ago (I'd visited their home at the time) and I wondered how that had turned out. It seems that he was in remission for ten years ... but recently it has returned ... with a vengeance ... and he was just in the middle of getting a transplant at that time. So I offered my good wishes for all of them and offered to say some prayers on their behalf. One never knows what may show up around the next bend in the road. Comments (1)Thank you - that I did. Repaired some pants - patched back pockets so that my keys don't fall out. Now I have to fix some holes in the floor of the van so that my feet (or those of my passenger) don't fall out. Like they say - be sure to wear your seatbelt! I think that's going to wait till spring! Darned some socks. Daughter called from the Caribbean, renting a sailboat with friends and scuba diving - for upwards of two months. Was recently laid off and returned to Canada (which included paying off the lien on her recently purchased automobile before she could bring it across the border). Brother called, the retiring farmer in Saskatchewan with whom I spent our first Christmas together in many years. Son (local) and a couple of friends. Will probably go out on the town with son and daughter on her return - in a couple of weeks. Renewed my auto licence and driving licence the day before - after Senior Men's Coffee gathering in church which I attended as a kid (where I sang in choir before voice change). They had a cupcake each, with one candle on top, for another old guy and me whose birthdays are in January. With the increase in consumerism and so many of us feeling more pushed than a few years ago, seems to me that we seniors, many of whom enjoy the privilege of pensions, should do what we can to volunteer in our communities, to help things run more smoothly in our society. With many grandparents living so far away, perhaps some of us can be substitute Grandparents for some local kids. What a great world that we live in! (And - we should take better care of it, not mess it up for our grandkids). With a wider variety of cultural patterns in our community and country as a result of increased immigration in recent years, it is important that we learn of the ways of life that others have followed. I've found that, if one listens when living among people of different cultures, often the way that they do things makes a lot of sense - after all, their forebears have been improving their society for many generations. I wrap fairly large pieces (uncut) in plastic wrap or a ziploc getting as much air out as possible. Then wrap again in foil. Label and freeze. Comments (57)Glad to hear you had a good day and are out and about as usual. Recycling is an inefficient answer to the problem of too much trash. Best not to buy the 'trash' in the first place. That's hard to do, when at least half of what's on the shelf in the grocery store is *plastic* and will NEVER go away. (I heard that statistic on PBS radio this morning, a rebroadcast from the BBC.) I've just realized that I will soon reach the last year where I can offhandedly refer to being 'in my seventies'. <sigh>...See More
