iso: a good, basic tomato sauce

I've been told I'm a good cook. Most people really like my food. "I" like my food...but I can not make a good tasting tomato sauce. Almost any jarred or canned commercially produced sauce tastes better than any from scratch sauce I've made.

I follow the recipe, saute the onion and garlic. Some recipes say add celery and carrot. Some not. It doesn't matter. My sauce is thin, bitter; without much flavor. Even if I add brown sugar, or let it cook a long time it's still mediocre. I live in a small town, far from any big city. Our town has a Walmart and two low cost grocery stores. You can't get good produce here. Only ordinary shelf brands are available.

As long as my sauce is so inferior, I'll continue to purchase the national and/or store brands, but it would be nice to make a good home-made scratch sauce.
