Absolutely. Seems like Hollywood just can't come up with much that's original. Even my sis in LA, who has always been a serious movie buff and up until recently has seen every new movie, has just about given up.

Same way with new TV shows. Good thing I go to bed early.......

Psycho's remake was a waste of time too. But I did like the remake of Miracle on 34th Street.

I love the movie The Scarlet Pimpernel and watched it recently, the 80's version. I watched a segment of another more recent version, and it was not nearly as good.

I was thinking the same thing Maranntx- That is the only movie that comes to mind as being a good remake.

There is a recent remake of The Pink Panther with Steve Martin. I haven't seen it and probably never will. Nobody can replace Peter Sellers as Inspector Closeau.

I've enjoyed some remakes more than the original. The Italian Job and Ocean's 11 especially. I can barely get thru the originals

I love the original Sabrina and think the remake isn't awful, but not as good.

Didn't you like You've Got Mail? It's a loose remake of Shop Around the Corner and In The Good Ole Summertime.

Maybe it's just that I love watching movies, but I hated the new Manchurian Candidate and haven't seen the other 2 you mentioned.

I also can't stand remakes. They're never as good as the originals. I preferred the orignal Miracle on 34th Street, sorry :-)
The remake of The Thomas Crown Affair was a waste of film IMHO. The chess game scene in the original was sooooooo laden with suppressed lust, the new version, eh.
I think it's because the older movies were more concerned with drama and emotions, the newer ones with whizz-bang effects, which changes the whole feel of the movie.
Just write your own screenplays, guys!

Unless they make them word for word and scene for scene most are not worth seeing IMHO Some are good: some versions of Little Women and The Count of Monte Cristo.I like all the vesions of A Christmas Carol. I hate it when they try to modernize the clssics on film and on stage. Yes I do like all of the Shop around the corners including You've got mmail they used the idea behind it for the story and were not bold enough to advertise as a remake.

I agree, most remakes are terrible but the one I really thought was well done, if you like this genre is 1982's John Carpenter's "The Thing" a remake of the 1951 film "The Thing from another planet." Great effects and tension.

And I count "You've Got Mail" as one of my all time favorite movies.

Although the 1953 version of "Titanic" with Clifton Webb
and Barbara Stanwyck was a remake itself I still prefer it by far over the re re make with Leonardo DiCaprio.

Watched a remake of "It Happened One Night" with Claudet Colbert and Clark Gable. It was just two days ago and already I forget the name of the remake. It starred Jack Lemon and June Allison. It held pretty much to the story line, but it's hard to beat Clark Gable and Claudet Colbert. I would say its getting near time for a remake of the remake!! Also I remember being halfway though the remake of A Love Affair with Cary Grant and Jean Kerr...the Warren Beatty and Annette Benning movie....before I realized it was even the same movie!

I LOVE the version of Titanic that abr4xii mentioned. I just saw it a week or two ago. I like it way more than the Leonardo version.

I recently watched "Love Affair," the remake of "An Affair to Remember." Gimme the original! Annette Bening is a pleasure to watch, but the movie can't compare to the first one.

Father of the Bride with Steve Martin cannot hold a candle to the original with Spencer Tracy.

The skill is just not there today. Even the actors cannot act as well. As someone mentioned, they are so hung up on the technical whiz bangs and car chases that they forget to develop the characters and the story line.

I liked the remake of The Thing with Kurt Russell, An Affair to Remember and loved the Pink Panther with Steve Martin. I never saw the original because, unlike ronf, I don't care for Peter Sellers (sorry ronf)! I won't even go watch The Day The Earth Stood Still because there can be no other!!! One of my all time favs!

It seems as if the creative juices dried up sometime in the late sixties. This goes for television, too.
I really like the old movies and can't think of one remake that was as good as, or better than the original.
Most of the classic television programs were all done before the seventies.
