If the thread has a pic in it, the camera is displayed. No pic = no camera.

I wonder why, if there is,a picture in the post itself, sometimes a little blue box with a question mark appears in the post, and sometimes the picture appears. If I click on the little question mark, the picture opens in a new tab. Is it my iPad? And it may change from one viewing of the post to the next!

Maybe its got to do with whether you upload a picture directly, or use a link from a hosted site (i.e. photobucket). Let's try an experiment. This pic is from photobucket - if there's no camera, then you have your answer.

Yes, Aloha, I understand that, but my question was about the posts that do contain photos but do not display the camera icon. See linked thread as an example.

That boxed question happens with me, too. I thought maybe it had to do with being a very long file. If you sit and wait will it load?

The box thing sounds like what the browser will post (the design is per browser) when it sees an image tag but can't display it. Sometimes there's a typo in the image address. Sometimes the privacy settings don't allow it to be displayed. If the box is clickable, there is a link tag as well as an image tag. This is what a lot of the photo sharing services like Photobucket do. They wrap an image with a link to their sites. Sometimes, it's a link to the library containing it or the image posted, sometimes just to the homepage of the service. I assume it's possible to prevent an image from drawing on an outside site but still have one's privacy settings so that people clicking in can see it.

I thought if the original post used the GW thing to add a photo, you get the icon, otherwise not. If you add it by embedding with HTML, you don't get it.

Oh, you're gonna want this one, too! I also notice that the camera icon is not there sometimes, but photos are. There must be a reason, but I don't want anyone to explain it to me! My eyes will glaze over. The result of years living with a man who can't explain why his dirty socks are always on the floor, but will go on - and on and on - about how a new gadget works.

Okay, timing of original post sounds like a reasonable explanation. I will watch out for that.

I was thinking Fori was right because it sure looks like it, but I found a counterexample in the hemp tofu thread I started in Cooking yesterday. Camera icon, but only image is tagged in from a commercial site rather than uploaded. And I know the photo doesn't have to be in the first post. I haven't found any camera icons on threads dated before January 2012. That might not be the start date, but I don't think it was much previous.

(I'm sick and have nothing better to do than go look....)

Oh, sorry to hear it.

There are two entirely separate sorts of images. One, hosted by GW by way of the "Image file to upload (optional):" function, will show the camera icon. Inline pics using anchor tags within the post's text to external pics on another site are not known by the functions of GW and won't show a camera icon.

Grubby, Check out Hemp Tofu in cooking. There's a camera icon. I posted the picture. It's an external image hosted on a vendor site, inserted in the text with an image tag (anchor tags are for links, but I assume you meant to say "image"). I'm sure the GW function just looks for an image tag, which is what it uses with the pictures you upload as well. It has to or your browser wouldn't be able to display them.

Hm... So just to be sure that having the image tag embedded in an anchor tag, to make it clickable, doesn't interfere (can't see why it would, but one must be complete), I added a linked image to a thread on guava leaves in the Test Forum. How lucky that there was a question I could answer with a linked picture! BOOP! Up pops up the camera icon, instantly, where it hadn't been before. As it should be. It would be poor programming practice if it didn't work this way.

And, furthermore, I just added an image (external) to a 2010 thread in Dessert Exchange. BOOP! Up pops the camera icon.

In other words, as soon as the system sees an image in a thread, it posts the icon, but it doesn't comb through old posts looking for them. It would seem that adding a text post, like in the IKEA thread that KD referenced from the start, doesn't get the whole thread reevaluated. Old posts don't count. Add a new post with an image to an old thread, you get a camera.

Summary:
Camera icons are added next to the subject line on the index when a new post containing any kind of image is added, starting, at the latest, in January 2012.

Thanks, KD. It's nothing awful. Just bad enough for a day wasted watching TV and playing iPad games. Very restful, but boring enough to make tracking down proofs a fun little task. :)

I'm all for a cute corgi thread! I wanted a corgi and got two (wonderful-but-sometimes-too-tall-because-they-can-get-things-off-the-counter) aussies instead.

He's all mine - he was all tuckered out from a trip to see my son last summer. He slept with his head on the armrest for hours on the way home.

Here he is again - awake. His name is Yancy.

And here's my first Corgi, Topper. We lost him to cancer at age 10. A week later, my 16-yr-old son said "Mom, there's a great big Corgi-sized hole in this house.". I was on the phone to the breeder the next day, and we had Yancy within a week.

Topper was an amazingly special - and smart! - dog. DH taught him to "speak", but his bark is so loud that it was annoying. One day after asking him to Speak, I put my finger to my lips and quietly said "Topper, Woof." Somehow he figured out what I wanted, and he gave me a quiet little "woof". He loved that trick - sometimes he only moved his lips! I wish I had video of that.

I LOVE Corgis. Ann, your Yancy is a little doll and I'll bet Topper was a lot of fun. I have a Havanese and a Yorkie but I would sure love a Corgi pup.
