Help with New Trane XL15i Match...

To start, thank you all for sharing your knowledge, I've learned so much from this forum...

I'm about ready to have installed a new 4-ton Trane XL15i system (a 4twx5048 heat pump, bayevac10lg heat strip, and tam7a0c42 air handler) for use in Atlanta, GA. I feel great about the installer, system sizing, and modifications to my ductwork, but would really like to know:

Instead of the 4twx5048 should I specify the apparently newer revision of the same unit the 4twx5049e?

2. Instead of the Hyperion 7 tam7a0c42 should I specify a Hyperion 8 tam8xxxxx? I don't know if the XL15i can make use of the Hyperion 8/tam8 communication. If it can't, should I at least specify the tam7a0c48 (instead of the tam7a0c42 as it might be a better AHRI match)?

3. Apart from Trane's expensive XL950/ComfortLinkII thermostat, would the best thermostat match for the XL15i heat pump /Hyperion 7/8 air handler be the HW VisionPro IAQ? I am thinking that the 803 won't communicate with the XL15i and the HW VisionPro IAQ can adjust the Hyperion (tam7/tam8) air handler's variable speed blower instead of just over-cooling.

P.S. It looks like the bayevac10lg is a common heat strip for Atlanta, GA... Does anyone see any drawbacks to its use in this system?

I will assume you are sized correctly.

I will assume your ductwork has been inspected both size, leak test, insulation, and adequate returns. Any hot/cold spots?

If this was my choice, I would want the 5049E1 condenser model with the
TAM7A0C48 H1. That is AHRI #4385471.

I don't like that 10 KW heat strip. I realize Atlanta normally has moderate winters. However, if you had a breakdown and had to go on emergency, then that yields only about 35 KBTUs. I would install Trane's two stg 7/12
KW heat strip.

I would also want the latest HW IAQ stat for best AC dehumidification. Otherwise, the 803 or HW 8321(identical) with overcooling.

If you don't have a media box filter, I would add one.

If you follow this advice, you will be fine, comfortable, and happy.

One last question... Would the tam8a0c48 do anything different / better than the tam7a0c48 h1 in this particular application (i.e. being used with the XL15i/4twx5049e and the latest HW IAQ stat)? In my research it looks like the tam8's only benefit over the tam7 is that it is communicating and I'm not sure that would even matter with a XL15i (as compared to a XL20i) and HW IAQ stat...

The lineset is the original lineset. It is secure in the attic, but who knows if it secure in the wall. I would think yes, because I cannot move it much in the vertical section, when messing with it in the attic. The lineset set is perfect. I think it is 5/8 and 3/8, which is what the xl15i was spec'd for. I called trane and if necessary, there seems to be a way to get a field rep. I am hoping I won't need it. The problem is the noise is not horrible. But, it is damn annoying and should not be, or they wouldn't sell too many of these things. I am thinking maybe they can move the unit a foot further away from the wall and my unit and put it on isolators.

Finally got the quote from the 2nd Trane dealer: Furnace: XV95 + Honeywell VisionPro IAQ, new air supply ducting to upstairs bedroom, new cold air return on main - $5865. Furnace Model No. TDH2B080A9V3VA This has an output of 49,400/76,000 BTUH for stage 1 and 2. My current 80% AFUE Heil is rated 75,000 BTUH input, so this XV95 has at least 25% more heating capacity. Heat Pump Option: XL15i - $5905 complete. Model No. 4TWX5036B1000A (3 ton capacity, house is 2300 sq ft, 2-story) Installed with Trane Coil, Model No. 4TXXCB036BC3HCA (other dealer quoted a 4TXCB036BC3HCA, so maybe the above is a typo?) ARI Ref# 1384223 Cooling Capacity, 34800 EER (cooling), 11.40 SEER (cooling), 13.5 Heating Capacity @ 47F, 37200 Region IV HSPF (heating), 8.3 Heating Capacity @17F, 24200 This doesn't exactly look like a very stellar system combination for the price as none of the specs on the HP/coil combo would qualify it for the $1500 tax credit. I do believe the XV95 would qualify however. The other problem is I don't think the furnace or the HP would qualify for our local utility rebate of $350 since you can't get the rebate on a 90%+ furnace if installed as a backup system with a HP, and I don't think the HP listed here would qualify on it's own. Guess I would have to install the furnace and coil 1st, claim the rebate, then install the HP or AC if I felt like it. It's all too damn confusing. Pricing from all the dealers is pretty close, but the quotes are not exactly apples to apples so it is a bit hard to judge. I thought the XL15i had much better efficiency ratings that listed above. Think I need a quote on an AC unit instead of the HP as I still don't like the idea of the 95% AFUE furnace just sitting there most of the time. Would love any input or suggestions.

It's a good system if installed/sized correctly, as always. However, tiger is correct that the 4TEE3F39A1 air handler yields higher efficiency ratings (which qualify for the $1500 tax credit as do the ratings provided by the model you were initially quoted). The 39A1 air handler is physically larger (by quite a bit) and would need to have its airflow settings adjusted to match the 2 ton unit, but this is very possible and common. Price differs by company, job, location, etc., but for my area (MD/DC) that would be the range you're looking at. Some do it cheaper, some don't, but you always get what you pay for in this industry it seems. I'd still like more details from the quote, however, if given to you. I.e., will they flush or reuse the existing refrigerant lines (necessary for switchover to R-410A refrigerant), will they need any additional ductwork modifications, balancing airflow throughout home (probably not if you had no hot/cold spots in the past), etc.? Might be able to save a few bucks by going with the XR15 heat pump, which has virtually the same efficiency ratings just different physical look outside. It's a newer model. Hope this helps, post back with any further questions.

I would weigh the price difference on the Tam7 and HW VP IAQ stat latest mdl versus the TAM8 and Trane 950 stat. I would expect the former would be less expensive and the latter not worth it. Either way though, it is important to qualify dealer's knowledge and installation experience with each system.

TD is right on about the heat strips. Connecting these in 2-stage will let you use the 7kw on those cool times when the HP cant quite get there and save you a little over the 10k. Also gives you 19kw in emergency mode.

I appreciate the kudos from the prior post but don't want to mislead. The two stg heat strip as mentioned has two stages, a 7 KW heat strip which yields about 24 KBTUs plus the high stage 12 KW, about 41 KBTUs. This would help you when in a defrost mode, the 10 KW heat strip would be way too lite.

Discuss with dealer. Not a detail to ignore.

I've asked the contractor I feel best about for quotes on both the:

- Trane XL15i/Hyperion7 system (4twx5049e1, tam7a0c48h41, Trane 7/12kw staged strips, and Honeywell VisionPro IAQ (the YTH9421, which includes the thermostat itself (TH9421) and interface panel (THM5421) (ARI # 4385471)))

and the

- Trane XL20i/Hyperion8 system (4twz0048a, tam8a0c48v41, Trane 7/12kw staged strips, and Trane XL900 (ARI # 4770461))
