I bought two dozen from last week also, but luckily they come from Ozark Farms which aren't on the list. Yet.

Dh has eaten some, and he hasn't gotten sick.

I saw the article, live in WI and have eggs in the fridge. I didn't bother checking the brand. Heat will kill Salmonella and I don't used them raw in dressing or undercooked.

We get ours from a local company called "Nellie's Nest" - certified humane raised, environmentally responsible, yadda yadda blah blah. They cost about a buck more than a regular dozen of generic grocery store eggs. (OTOH, "Pete & Gerry's Organic Eggs" are from the same farm and cost twice as much.) I don't do it for any envirohippie sort of reason, they tasted better.

I swung through one of our local pitiful excuses for a farmer's market yesterday... yup, they're price-gouging on eggs. Sheesh.

Funny enough, DH just read the China Study about a month ago and he does all our food shopping right now. He has not been buying eggs since he read the book so we have had no worries. Not sure if NY is on the list or not.

You can go to the CDC website and find the plant number and date number for the recalled eggs. I do not know that they have even been found in our area. No shortage of eggs here.

I buy eggs so seldom that I couldn't tell you what they're doing here. We are thinking of getting some chickens ourselves, tho. But I am afraid that Labradors & chickens won't mix too well.

I do know that people who sell their own raised eggs typically charge at least a dollar more per dozen, this was prior to the latest egg issue.

The list of states and producers involved is growing every day, our state was just added yesterday (Michigan). It makes you wonder if the powers that be know what they're doing....you'd think after all the recalls we've had they'd do a better job.

We don't use them often, but DH likes them all different ways and I'd hate to take the chance. I'm just going to toss the carton and go buy some from a fresh dairy farm not far from here. We have a great farmers market. I usually shop there or at other small local businesses. I hadn't thought about switching to the dairy for milk and eggs, but will now. I don't mind paying more if it means it's fresh and will avoid these stupid recalls that shouldn't be happening in the first place.

I just hope this puts that horrid old man Jack DeCoster out of business.

I agree gray! DeCoster is notorious. I buy eggs from my niece. I used to have chickens and would love to have some again but I only want a couple. I'd have to raccoon, bob cat and mountain lion proof an area... It doesn't seem worth all the trouble for a couple hens when my niece sells me a dozen for $2.00, including delivery.

Of course, you're right. The truth is, the chickens aren't enlightened, their owner is. That's why they're not in cages, or even locked inside a barn. ;^)

I sympathize with you about the predators; if we didn't have the LGDs, we couldn't have any poultry or livestock either.

I bought my last dozen eggs 2 weeks ago. Then, here in New Mexico, ours were supposed to still be ok. This past Sunday morning, DH & I made pork chops and eggs (sunny-side-up) for breakfast with the last of them. Monday morning I woke up with the-stomach-flu-from-hell and was sure I'd contracted salmonella from an egg! If DH hadn't been a family practice doc ~and there to assure me that it wasn't~ I'd have headed straight to the ER! He was thankfully right and by Tuesday afternoon I was fine again. My heart goes out to all the poor people who HAVE contracted salmonella from their eggs, though; it's one terrible sickness!
Sooooo, I'm heading off this morning to grocery shop and wonder what, if any, eggs I'm going to be able to buy today. I'd love to find someone locally to buy my eggs from! Out here in the mountains, chickens, cats and small dogs are in danger from coyotes, mountain lions, bobcats, hawks, eagles and owls. They have to be in fenced-in yards with chicken wire overhead, too, in order to keep them safe.

I want to make potato salad and coconut cream pie this weekend and that calls for eggs, lots of them in the salad. Would ya'll be afraid to use eggs? I don't think Alabama has had any cases.

Lynn, how nice to have a Dr in the house. I heard they've isolated the salmonella to the food source. Can anyone explain how this happens? I wonder if small farm chickens are at risk if it's in the chicken feed...

Golddust, it's not likely that any local small farms are feeding the same thing as the big poultry houses as they mix and ship in their own feed.

I work on an agricultural campus and happen to work with a couple of poultry specialists. The local news contacted us this week for help in a story LOL. (This happens pretty often.)

Yes, this can happen to small home flocks. One thing the former Secretary (of commerce I think) mentioned in his interview the other day was about that. He used the example of mice. Say you have mice near your chickens (we know many barns have mice), actually near the chicken feed. Mice can spread salmonella through their droppings. If the droppings are near the feed . . . well then it's easy for the chicken to pick up the salmonella. Which is then easily passed on to the egg. So while many farms and home flocks would be safer because they may have better sanitation procedures, etc. it doesn't necessarily guarantee that they will be safe.

That's absolutely true Tina. I thought she meant the source was a specific batch of feed from those farms, rather than just "in the feed" in general.

I'm assuming the plan for the affected flocks is "depopulation" and sterilizing the buildings. I wonder how many birds that is? Anyway, maybe you can help me with something; I keep seeing over and over about how the salmonella vaccine 'could' have prevented this outbreak, and that there are some flocks in the US that are currently using the vaccine. (Though no article has mentioned any producers/companies by name)

Personally, if you're selling eggs for human consumption, the use of a vaccine sounds like a good idea to me, and I'm about as small-scale production wise as you can get. The statement that keeps coming up is how use of the vaccine adds less than a dime to the cost of a dozen eggs; does that mean "less than a dime" if you're able to spread the cost out over several million eggs, or like other poultry vaccines, is it really inexpensive? The website for the sole US manufacturer restricts all but animal health care professionals from even reading the product literature, and I have a feeling that thanks to the economics of scale, the "little guys" would be shut out.

Yes, little dog I do cook the eggs in the potato salad and coconut pie. I feel better now, I can eat two large pieces of CC pie and end up with a tummy ache. Tummy ache sounds so much better than belly ache, huh?

Seeing as how coconut creme is one of my favorites, I'd suggest spaceing it out, maybe one piece at lunch, another after dinner, a sliver for bed time snack, and a big 'ol chunk to start the day out right in the morning, and you should be fine. LOL
