The dog ate my soda bread

It's been that kind of day....decided to make soda bread to munch on even though I knew I'd be the only one eating it. We don't do anything special for St. Patrick's Day but soda bread sounded like a good way to at least do something Irish:) So I got the bread made and even took a few pictures of it before leaving to pick munchkin #2 up from school. He got in the house before me, let the dog in and that was all she wrote. At least I had had the good sense to eat some before dinner!

Dale, I am truly sorry to hear that man's best friend sort of went nuts and failed to mind his manners. I hope you get some more melons and tomatoes from those plants. There must be something about canines and melons, because here in the boondocks, coyotes devour melons like mad and don't even wait for the melons to get close to being ripe. Fred has lost practically all his melons at the old home place to coyotes the last few years, and he used to plant dozens and dozens of plants. I think he's given up on raising melons out there any more, and it is a shame because the old home place has great sandy soil along the Red River. Most of my dogs don't eat tomatoes, but they're fenced out of the garden anyway. Since we have hard clay soil, they can't dig under the fence although they certainly have run amok in the garden when I have forgotten and left the gate open. (A mistake you only make a couple of times before you learn that your garden pays the price for a gate left open.) Do you think your dog was playing or was thirsty? Maybe he or she had knocked over the water dish and sought out the fruit for the water content? Maybe the dog wanted to play ball? My dogs grow their own gourds and pumpkins on the dogyard fence and randomly pull them and play with them whenever the mood strikes, so they don't necessarily get a lot of gourds or pumpkins to full maturity, but they have fun. The stink bugs are atrocious this year. Between them and the grasshoppers, it is a wonder I have a garden left. I haven't had SVBs this year, but have squash bugs, the aforementioned stink bugs (they arrived in May again which is abnormally early), and leaf-footed bugs. You know, pelting the dog with tomatoes might not be a bad idea. Here in our area, when a country dog kills a family chicken, some people tie the dead chicken carcass to the dog's collar and leave it there a couple of days so the dog has to smell that decaying corpse. They claim it teaches the dog a lesson, but uggh, I don't think I could do it. Luckily, our dogs aren't bird killers. Every year we have different gardening challenges, and some years are more challenging than others. You still have plenty of time to get lots more tomatoes and other veggies since the average frost date for your area is....what....about early November? Every winter, I start out the year with such high hopes for the garden, and then it is always a struggle all spring and summer to try to make the dream a reality. If it isn't the weather, it is the pests, or the deer or the rabbits or.....whatever disease is most active that year. What keeps us all going? Probably that old saying "there's always next year". Since we've lived here, every animal known to mankind has attempted to destroy my garden, though thankfully not all in the same year. As soon as I figure out how to exclude one type of wildlife, another one figures out how to get into the garden. I've seen animals in/around my garden that I never knew existed....until we moved here, I didn't know that there was such a thing as a ring-tailed cat. (That particular wild critter likes to eat our young poultry.) I'd never expected to have a beaver killing our trees, or a cougar hanging out at the edge of the garden, or skunks digging up sunflowers or turtles eating tomatoes. It is always something......and I didn't know that deer ignore those lists of "plants that deer won't eat" and eat them anyway. Recently, I noticed 1 lone pigweed plant in the corner of the potato bed. I kept meaning to dig it up or cut it down---seems like it zoomed from 6" tall to 5' tall in about a week.....but before I got around to it, a deer ate it. Ha! At least the deer are good for something. I think I grew okra here for 5 years before I ever got a pod because the deer would jump the then-three-foot-tall garden fence and eat every plant down to the ground at some point during the season. All that's ever worked for me is the 7' tall fence we have now, and it only works if I remember to always close both gates. One reason I haven't expanded the garden more and more every year is because it means moving the 7' tall fence or errecting another one. I have friends who garden in towns, both large cities and small towns, and they often find fruit missing from their plants, or sometimes entire plants gone, and believe it is two-legged critters stealing their fruit and veggies, flowers and herbs. So, I guess a garden is never truly 'safe'. Hopefully the second half of this gardening year will turn out better than the first. Or, as I always say, there's always next year..... Dawn

So What Does Soda Bread Taste Like?

I worked at an Irish restaurant when I was18-22 and they had soda bread in the bread basket all yr long but it was on the dry side. Years later I looked for a recipe that had the flavor but a bit more moisture and finally I hit on one that i now make as a rule every St pats. The two finalist recipes were very good and so close that I had to dye one green to distinguish it from the other [and I put a green dot on the recipe to match so I would know!] In the end the one I really love has a great crust and a lovely moist texture and I make at least a dozen every year to give to neighbors, bus drivers, teachers, friends. It's a hit. Oh and I use 2/3 golden raisins and 1/3 regular which makes it even better. INGREDIENTS (Nutrition) 1/2 cup white sugar 4 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 3/4 teaspoon salt 3 cups raisins 1 tablespoon caraway seeds 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1 1/4 cups buttermilk 1 cup sour cream Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9 inch round cast iron skillet or a 9 inch round baking or cake pan. In a mixing bowl, combine flour (reserving 1 tablespoon), sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, raisins and caraway seeds. In a small bowl, blend eggs, buttermilk and sour cream. Stir the liquid mixture into flour mixture just until flour is moistened. Knead dough in bowl about 10 to 12 strokes. Dough will be sticky. Place the dough in the prepared skillet or pan and pat down. Cut a 4x3/4 inch deep slit in the top of the bread. Dust with reserved flour Bake in a preheated 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) oven for 65 to 75 minutes. Let cool and turn bread onto a wire rack. Had Irish soda bread served at Irish pub today. My choice is Irish Brown Bread, which I love. Here's a recipe I shared. Never made it, but KT'er used this recipe and thought it was great. Irish Brown Bread If you can't get to Ireland to savor their wonderful Brown Bread, this is the best recipe using American whole wheat flour: 1 ¾ cups all purpose flour 1 ¾ cups whole wheat flour 3 tablespoons toasted wheat bran 3 tablespoons toasted wheat germ 2 tablespoons old-fashioned oats 2 tablespoons packed dark brown sugar 1 teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons (¼ stick) chilled unsalted butter, cut into pieces 2 cups buttermilk Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Butter a 9x5x3-inch loaf pan. Combine first 8 ingredients in large bowl; mix well. Add butter; rub in with fingertips until mixture resembles fine meal. Stir in enough buttermilk to form soft dough. Transfer dough to prepared loaf pan. Bake until bread is dark brown and tester inserted into center comes out clean, about 40 minutes. Turn bread out of pan and cool right side up on rack.

Wow. When I was little, we'd beg my mother for currants rather than regular raisins. They came in a yellow Sunmaid box and were sold next to the red box with the regular raisins (I assume they were more expensive, or maybe she just wanted some scarcity at home to keep them as a treat, in buying fewer of them, but we used to eat them right out of the box). They have them in the bulk bins now, as well as on the shelves. I always feel so sad for those of you who have such limited access to a variety of foods. Whenever I see those TV shows where people are moving to out of the way "paradises", I keep thinking of the commerce (not just food) one would be giving up. I've lived in the middle of nowhere, whence I brought back a broom on a four hour bus ride from a visit to the big city because my little town only had them once a year. Thank goodness for sisters and Amazon!

Aw, Tracey, I'm sorry. Naughty, naughty dog. Maybe it's Irish? Doesn't look much like an Irish Setter or an Irish Wolfhound, but I guess you never know. (grin)

If it helps at all, I made Boston Brown Bread last week while I was babysitting the dog of Ashley's fiancee. I put the loaf on the counter to cool and when I came back into the kitchen I found that Buster had eaten HALF the loaf of bread. Not all, half. Yeah......

So, I cut it up and used it for dog snacks, and fortunately, he didn't touch the other one.

Now I wonder if maybe he didn't like it. Darn.

Let the poor dog back in, he's sorry.

Just think of the calories he saved you! He did it all for you! And look at the bright side, he did not eat any cabbage. Now that might have you up tonight, like at 3 AM.

LOL.. Tracey! What's really cracking me up is that he's standing up on that thing so that he can see in the window easier..LOL. And that innocent look. Ha, don't buy it. I've seen it before. Be particularly suspicious when the pooch that lower lip out. Otoh, the soda bread looks...looked.. really good!

I have a giant mastiff that is so tall, he looks down at my countertops, it's a huge undertaking keeping him away from anything I make!

I have a Leonberger who can counter surf with the best of them, too.

Fortunately he's not nearly as food driven as most Leos, so it's not been a problem.

That's funny!

My parents had a shephard mix that ripped an almost cooked steak off the grill once. My mother was using up a variety of steaks before she ordered another half side of beef. There was a couple of sirloins and one T-bone. The dog grabbed the T-bone!

My previous dog Nikky didn't have height, but she did have reach.

I was in the basement and I heard her dancing and prancing in the kitchen overhead.

I ignored it for a few minutes, but then decided that she may have to go out, so I went up.

She heard me coming and hightailed it upstairs, which I thought was kind of odd...

Until I saw the butter dish on the counter in the kitchen.

I thought I had it pushed back far enough, but not quite. She had to stand on her back legs and REALLY stretch her upper body over the counter to get at it.

There were tooth and tongue marks all over what was left of the stick.

Well I spoke too soon...my DH who is far less squeamish than I decided after he saw that the front of the bread was the only part missing that he was going to eat some. Sooo, three of us had soda bread:)The last time I made it, I don't think DH touched it but this loaf must have looked better. And yes, I let the dog back in....eventually. Overall, he's a very good dog but he is definitely food driven! Plus he has the chewing thing going on which has taken a toll on my couch cushions. And I swear when he cocks his head to the side and looks at me, he really is thinking "seriously, what's the big deal? I was hungry!"

Thanks for all the dog stories, makes me feel better.

And there-in lies the reason why I have a toy poodle! Not food driven...checks anything over before she eats it....but Kleenex? That's another story.
Let me know and I'll make him his own soda bread....might even lace it with chicken liver....if he will teach Latte to go when I let her out!!

He's obviously still a puppy, with the chewing going on in your house Tracey. You need eyes in the back of your head, and roller skates to keep up with him! He's just too cute!

Gina I was visiting friends lately who have 2 Bull Mastiffs, mother and daugher and they are huge!! The daughter is bigger than the mother. So friendly and affectionate.

Kframe I googled Leonberger....what a beauty!!!! How's the shedding and the grooming though?? The pics make me think they are as loveable as they come.

Be careful of letting that cutie-pie eat raisins or grapes...they can be toxic in larger quantities. I'm sure there were not that many in the soda bread, but if he has a tendency to raid the kitchen, keep raisins and grapes out of reach.

Kframe: Was your dog a Polish Lowland Sheepdog? Sometimes I wonder how my pup, well. . . he's 16 manages to reach as far as he does on counters. I think all these dogs have a thing for whatever is denied them on the counter, whether it's in the kitchen or in the bathroom. How could a hair brush with synthetical bristles possibly taste good?

BUT; here's one that will really make you cry. I had baked two of Ann T's cream cheese danishes, one was consumed by humans who then left the house. On return the other had been completely consumed by my four-legged friend. How he managed to pull that pan off the counter is beyond me. (He is smaller than normal for the breed, but I've seen his "reach and swipe" in action.)

Great pic! Looks like he's wondering what the heck he did that was so bad.

My old Siberian Husky ate the leftover pot roast off the counter and then ate a veal cutlet off my mom's counter.

One of the few good things about being pet-less is that I can leave food on the coffee table and find it's still there when I return.

Dogs are funny.

I am so glad it's not just Chance who gets himself into trouble! He's around 1 1/2. Not sure exactly as we got him from a kill shelter but they told he was part Lab so the chewing has come as no surprise. Linda, the ONLY thing Chance has not eaten is lettuce so I know he would love anything you made for him:) I knew to make sure he didn't get chocolate or garlic but I didn't remember raisins. I'll have to make sure they stay away.
