What would you call this?

Browned butter is a popular ingredient in PA Dutch cooking and these little pans called "butter browners" are the perfect vehicle for making it. An acquaintance stopped in while I was cooking some and wanted to order one online. I told her of a store where she could buy one but she didn't want to drive that far. The store calls them butter browners too but there has to be another name for them that she can use to search.

Mine is about 2" high. The diameter of the hole is 1 1/2" on top and 2" on the bottom and the handle is about 4 1/2" long. I also have one that's twice as large in all the measurements.

What would you call this item and what would you use it for other than browning butter?

I don't have a technical word, but I would call it rather cute. I like it!

i love my nepenthes jamban which is pretty sought oot also there in nepenthes hamata... and sarracenia northwest has both jamban and a hamata hybrid I always reccomend ordering from them... plus there poi dog nepenthes are on sale. they are unknown hybrids but beautiful anyways. i would love to have darlingtonia but they are so hard to grow. ive seen them in the wild. my dewy pine is amazing and that you have to remember is almost a desert plant. sarracenia northwest has care sheets and amazing dvd's for everything. the only pland i've ordered from them that died was a cephalotus because they are hard but check them out.

Whatever the style is it certainly is something. I did mistakenly say the home was in Oconomowoc. Actually that is the location of the lister. The home is on Pine Lake in the Village of Chenequa (Hartland,WI). I am not sure what the first muraled room shown in my original post is, but I don't think it is a bathroom. It has upper cabinets on both sides of the room and the sink faucet looks like a kitchen faucet. It also looks like those might be 2 dishwashers, (painted of course) to the right of the sink. I just looked on the current lister's website and it has 48 pictures for the property, so here are some more. I promise, I won't add any more after this. I actually like this bathroom. Looks like there is a butlers pantry or scullery just off the kitchen Do you think that's the home owner playing the piano The current lister states that "Every detail was hand selected with thought and meaning behind every selection". Good to know that, I thought it was just heleter/shelter.

The armless ones do look good though -- and last longer because ... no one sits it them for long. That's also why parts of a sectional last a lot longer than other parts. Hope you find just the right chair. Houzz has a lot of them in a lot of styles. Happy hunting.

It is hard to judge from a photo, but I'm going with 19th, pine (which looks as if it has been stripped of its original finish), drop leaf English county style table. Never got around to answering your other post. But the dry sink is called a step back. Very often the sink has a zinq liner...I don't remember seeing that in your piece. You could call in a local, well respected antique dealer for appraisals. Or what I have done successfully in the past is call an auction house (I am on Cape Cod and I use Eldred's in East Dennis). You can start by sending the appraiser the photos. If any of the pieces are of value off they go to be in the next primitive auction.

I had a set of 4 and always called them butter warmers, but they had little frames to sit on that had a votive candle underneath to keep the butter warm. We used them for drawn butter for lobsters.....

My grandmother called hers a 'dipper'. I just googled and some dippers come up on etsy.com.

Thank you, Carol. I called and told her it's a butter melter. The one in my photo is on the 2nd page of the link but there's enough difference in price to cover the cost of gas if she wants to drive up to the hardware store that carries them.

Some of the other ones would work fine too but I like the narrow diameter, which facilitates the foaming and stirring down process while it's on the burner.

DD still has my mom's. It's exactly the same shape but the exterior enamel is solid dark brown and the interior is white.

I have white ceramic ones with the candle stands for butter for shellfish but can't cook in them.

no idea what to call it except I want some......think they would be amazing for maple syrup an /or melted butter!

I used to have a "set" like that....only mine were red enamel ware....and they were graduated in size. I think the smallest held half a cup and the largest 2 cups....don't remember how many there were....it was more than 40 years ago!
I used them for heating stuff like milk....or butter.
But because they were thin enameled steel they burned stuff unless you watched them closely.
Ultimatly I used one of them as garlic clove keeper! LOL!
I now have a copper, stainless lined butter melter....took a picture but photobucket has issues tonight.

Mine were bright orange enamel with white interior - very 1960's...... LOLOLOL! I inherited them from my mom when I got my first apartment and I have no idea what ever happened to them..... will have to look through the garage boxes at some point.

I still think it is a Turkish coffee pot. Or Greek. Or Arabic.

Isn't it amazing. The same warmer is still for sale on Amazon.

I entered "butter warmer" on ebay and then went to the Collectibles.

I thought this little Dutch cast iron one was darned cute.

"Turkish coffee pot is bigger?"

Amazon has an amazing number of Turkish coffee pots listed. They come in many different sizes. Most are larger than Ruthanna's butter browner. Some are not.

But that's moot since Carol found official butter warmers.
