What would be some origins of this excess soil or turf? From hardscape installation? That would be oe of the primary sources I can think of in which you are replacing your soil with something else you've brought in and would not necessarily have any other place to put it. Also in my town, if you try to dig, you will turn up large rocks, which most people to try to use in their yards somehow, but if they really don't "go" you'd have to make a pile and put a sign "take me" and wackos like me might, or you would have to kinda make them disappear. I've never used Freecycle, but I suppose if you had a dirt pile you could say, please come fill your buckets. However, if you have any kind of garden bed at all, you'd be amazed at what you can add to it. Or if you have a lawn, there may be low spots or ways to recycle some sod. But obviously not for huge amounts of material displaced by major construction.

We are putting hardwood in our kitchen. If you have a water leak and have to replace the floor there is the chance you will have to remove all the hardwood. We combined the master bedroom (hardwood) and the master bath (vinyl) and it is now the kitchen. We didn't have hardwood in the bathroom so I just assumed they could piece in the new hardwood and I would save $$ by keeping the hardwood in the kitchen. Turns out the labor involved to piece in the wood made it more expensive to add to the existing hardwood than to rip it out and install new everywhere it was needed. So if you have a leak, you might not be able to use the floor you have. Or you could decide you want to get a different type of floor. Or depending on the hardwood left over it may not match what is in the kitchen over time b/c in storage the flooring won't be exposed to light and the kitchen flooring will most likely change color with age. Also, where are you going to store the flooring? Also if you are worried about a leak, get a water alarm (this is what I am planning to do). I would use it in the bathroom and be done with it. That's just my .02.

There are many unknowns here, but here is what I would do: Invest in appliances that I know I'll want in the upcoming remodel. Buy a simple sink cabinet base to house the sink. Treat the rest of the kitchen space and storage needs as an unfitted kitchen. Perhaps check Craigslist for hutches, narrow tables and other furniture that could serve as storage, and functional workstations in your space. You won't be investing a great deal, and can repurpose or sell these pieces in the future. Open shelving instead of uppers. (More economical.) I would treat the area by the radiator as a landing zone or mini-mudroom, assuming the door to the outside is used and may need a place for sitting, hanging coats, etc. A large bench would work well. We have lots of experience with ponds, we've just never had something like this. And the few people I've called have also never dealt with this!
