Is there a simple way to test my Acidophilus capsules?

I bought a bottle of Acidophilus & Bifidus capsules about 8 months ago. I didn't know they needed to be kept in the fridge until now. I read the bottle and the capsules will expire Aug 2011. Since I didn't refrigerate the bottle, the potency probably is much lower by now. I normally use them to make yogurt but I am afraid the capsules are not good enough for that purpose. Is there a simple way to test them instead of wasting 1/2 gallon of milk? Al

Can you just try with a small amount of milk?

Thanks Jess! Yeah... that's what I will have to do if no other simple ways to test the potency of the capsules. I am just hoping for a short cut so I won't have to do the heating, mixing, cooling, incubating and the whole she bang. Laziness gets the best of me! :-)

A strobe light with calibrated frequency would allow measurement of the blade rate (per second). Dividing by the number of blades and '60' would yield the motor speed (rpm). Or, put a dot on a single blade and sync to it to get motor speed. I wasn't aware SubZero specified their condenser fan cfm. Measuring air velocity would allow computation of cfm, but only if flow were uniform over some relevant area. Non-uniform flow combined with blade tip spillage would make the measurement difficult unless the cfm were specified and measured on the other side of the condenser from the fan and integrated over the area of the condenser. kas

you did not mention which email client you use??? depending on your email client you may have to set it for rich text and then the icons will show up I know that is what you do in hotmail. In hotmail at the very top there is a drop down box with the options rich text, plain text and edit in html, set it on rich text that enables the new bar with various icons and options like font, size, color, bold, and also an icon that looks like a globe with a chain link in front of it, that is the insert hyperlink icon. However you need to tell us which type of email you use because it can be different on that one.

They have those red light cameras by my Mom's house in Illinois. They are a total scam and just a way to make money for the city, and have in fact been causing more accidents than they prevent. My Mom got a 100.00 ticket because when she went to make a turn on red, being FULLY STOPPED, her one wheel was slightly over the white line so she could see the road to her left. She refuses to even go to that place of business now. They had them in Schaumburg, where the huge Woodfield Mall is located, and traffic to the mall decreased so much they removed them. Well, I had a long reply written out and it was rejected. Okwriter, I hope your husband finds something out soon. Abdominal pain is rough--I had that for years--on the lower left side. I just pushed through it because the doctors could never find anything wrong. We used to have pretty good insurance as my husband is retired military but things have changed so much lately and we now live away from any base so I can't use military doctors any more. My doctor is looking at Celiac disease as a cause of the pain and anemia now too, has your husband been tested for that? I can go months without pain or "problems" but when they hit, I just about pass out from the pain. I find the older I get, the less pain I tolerate. Good luck to you and your husband. I apologize for barging in on your thread, but I see you know how to make yogurt from milk? I spend entirely too much money on yogurt at the store, so if you could give me the recipe, I would be so grateful.

Right. I was wondering about making creme fraiche (which is made at room temp, so wouldn't be as much work) but I think you'd need heavy cream for that.

Well, I don't know about making yogurt with it, but I have taken acidopholys for years and have NEVER refrigerated it and had no problems. I didn't know until Dec that it was supposed to be, when dad had pnuemonia, and had his in the frige. As long as it wasn't exposed to heat and light, there shouldn't be a problem.

Tami, I don't think there will be problems if not kept in the fridge. Just the potency decreases over time in room temperatures. That's what I've heard anyway.
