Capsule Endoscopy

Has anyone had a capsule endoscopy? I had an EGD and a colonoscopy on May 6 because of anemia and abdominal pain. The only things that were found was diverticulosis and diverticulitis and also some sores/irritation in my stomach. The doctor told me that he truly thought I had colon cancer but I don't--not even any polyps were found. He did biopsy my stomach, small intestines that he could see and parts of my colon. That all came back normal. Long story short--I am on a liquid only diet today and most of tomorrow without the rest of the bowel prep. I go in tomorrow and swallow a camera in a capsule. I have horrors of that show from the 70's or so where those doctors went into a mans body and walked around and looked at things. Any way, anyone had one of these and was it tolerable? I've never had one,but a few weeks ago saw Dr Oz do it on Oprah.Looked like he was just swallowing a pill of some sort.But what the camera saw was amazing.Sure a lot less invasive than surgery.JMO

Yeah, that is what the doctor said too--much less invasive. I truly don't think he will find anything as I have been having these problems since I was about 14--so that is 30 years. I woke up during the colonoscopy and it was painful but he said that was when he was trying to get through the area with the diverticulitis. I'll do anything to avoid another surgery--I have had more than enought to last me a life time. Thanks for answering. Sheila

Glad you found the issue. This problem can be difficult to diagnose. Obviously a CBC / Chem panel to start. Some horses with ulcers exhibit this symptom, usually with some behavior change, like not wanting to eat when food is out. Endoscopy can easily diagnose this and is not prohibitively expensive (approx $250 plus sedation in our area) Some horses seem to be carriers of salmonella or clostridium. There are PCR tests for this that can be carried out quite easily. Changes in feed are an obvious red flag, as is molasses, which someone mentioned. Cushings disease is another possibility. In really old horses (I have one who is 29, has always had a tendency to have 'cow pies' if upset or has any change in her routine - and now is more prone to that) they have much the same issue that really old humans have - organ systems aren't working as efficiently. Diagnosis is key. If nothing can be found, a prebiotic can safely be added (such as Ration Plus). Simple feeding of straight grass hay and water, plus hydrated beet pulp (very easy to digest) can help. Slippery Elm powder and Marshmallow root are generally very safe and easy to purchase at the health food store. They coat the stomach and intestines. Succeed (or it's main ingredients of the amino acids L-Glutamine and L-Threonine) can be very helpful in calming digestion.

Bon, I haven't had anything to add to this thread since I have no experience with GERD, but just wanted to say that I hope you are successful in getting the right medical diagnosis and then are successful in doing all the right things to correct the issue as well as you can in the most natural manner possible. My older brother suffered from ulcerative colitis for years without ever getting the right diagnosis until he was in either the later high school years or the early college years. (Granted, we didn't have the internet back then, so it was really hard to dig and research and find answers on your own way back then in the Dark Ages.) It is amazing how well most digestive issues can be managed nowadays with diet, some sophisticated medicines, etc. I am confident y'all will have success overcoming this health issue. Re: Pickles. Cucumbers are just that way. Tiny one day, gigantic Godzillas the next. I have to pick twice daily to catch them all while they are at the appropriate size for pickling, even though I normally do not make pickles daily. Well, I pickled cucumbers yesterday and I pickled peppers today, but I do not routinely pickle something every single day. Amy, I do find it interesting that the saltiness of brined and fermented foods often is not mentioned. I wonder why that is? I don't know if it is just because the people who eat those kinds of foods are so used to the salt that they don't think to mention it to others or if there is some other reason. We don't use a lot of salt in cooking, so when I ferment something, I do notice the higher salt levels when I eat it. Dawn

My sister in law had a doctor that dismissed the problem, I think a lot of women patients complain needlessly and doctors don't listen. She almost died and they never found a reason. She may have been taking to many aspirins she had done that before. My husband was taking meds for his AZ and when I told the doctor he was complaining of stomach discomfort, he just shrugged his shoulders. He had a stroke like event, I took him to the ER. There was blood in his urine, then in his stool and his blood count was down to 6 before they finally caught it. I kept telling them, the doc in ER found an infection, it wasn't on the papers, but one very nice nurse look on the PC and found it.

My dd has it very badly and I have had it off and on. I am convinced mine started when I ate at an Indian restaurant; I was out of whack and miserable for over a year. My dd also started with it after eating at a different restaurant, though she has always had what I'd call a touchy stomach and was unable to eat when nervous or excited. The last couple of years it's been very bad: colonoscopy, endoscopy, stomach-emptying test, gastro doc, dietician. And a celiac test for which she tested negative. HOWEVER, when she stopped eating gluten, things improved. I read recently that one can test negative for celiac and still have the symptoms. I have a theory concerning Monsanto, but I'll not mention that here. All I know is that there are waaaayyyy too many with this condition recently for there not to be a good reason for it. Dd found a different dietician whose diet she is following carefully, and she is feeling much, much better. She still is not really able to travel as she has to eat very specific foods, but she can function well now. Her trips to the bathroom are less often now and when she does have a "spell," it's for only a few days or a week. First and foremost, you must have a colonoscopy and endoscopy if you haven't done so yet. After that, start to research--you'll be amazed at how many different people suffer from this and how much information on how to deal with it there is. I wish you good luck and better health!

I wish DH could have one of those. After scans and colonoscopy and bloodwork, they were left shrugging at the cause of his left abdonminal pain. He still has the pain, although it only gets really bad a few times a week. *sigh* Evidently it's not bad enough that he's ready to go back for followup...I think he's still mad about how much the insurance left him to pay for the first mess of tests.

Well, I had a long reply written out and it was rejected.
Okwriter, I hope your husband finds something out soon. Abdominal pain is rough--I had that for years--on the lower left side. I just pushed through it because the doctors could never find anything wrong. We used to have pretty good insurance as my husband is retired military but things have changed so much lately and we now live away from any base so I can't use military doctors any more. My doctor is looking at Celiac disease as a cause of the pain and anemia now too, has your husband been tested for that? I can go months without pain or "problems" but when they hit, I just about pass out from the pain. I find the older I get, the less pain I tolerate. Good luck to you and your husband.
