Engineered hardwood thickness: 3/8 vs 1/2 in (mohawk)

We're in the process of selecting an engineered hardwood for about ~750 sq. ft including the entry/hall/study/living room region. It will be installed floating over concrete slab.

Based primarily on our budget, the floor guy recommended a 5" x 0.375" plank engineered hardwood in chocolate hickory (believe this is Brandymill by Mohawk; I know it is part of the Mohawk Artiquity line). I've taken one of the pieces home with me to help match cabinet stains and feels really thin - similar to laminate? -- it just has me a bit worried about durability, feel, sound, etc. I've also looked at the Santa Barbara by Mohawk, 5" x 0.5" plank, which feels a bit better in hand. The floor guy has assured me that once it is down there really is no difference (neither one can be refinished since they're handscraped/carved). My question: Is it worth the money to upgrade or are they basically the same once installed?
