Front Page 98 problems!

Hi!

I have installed FP98 and am trying to create a new web page but keep getting 'Unable to connect to a server at.......in port 80'.

This is frustrating me to NO END! I'm using the default name for the Internet Explorer but still get the same message.

If anyone can help me out here, I'd greatly appreciate it!!!

I've noticed that this forum does'nt seem to get much traffic anymore, so I thought I'd try to help you Susala.
I don't use Front Page, I use Adobe, PageMill.
Just a shot in the dark, change the port setting, to lets say... 21 (this is the port # I used) could'nt hurt to try.
Also what do you mean by:- using the default name for the Internet Explorer ? please post back later.

This is happening when you are trying to connect to the web server, Correct? If so then check your settings that you put in to access the server. Maybe they use a different port to transfer with. When i was using FP 98 i made a shortcut to the editor and bypassed the rest of the program. Since i use a FTP program(Leap FTP)i did not need the rest of FP. FP 2000 is much more integratedand does not have the problems that FP 98 does .

Do you have any colleges near you? Some sell it cheaper but I think they will only have 2002 now. I had a chance to by a educational copy real cheap and didn't and now I need it for a class. The college here puts last year's copy on sell at the end of the year. I bought my daughter a copy of Adobe Illustated 10 for $99 which is about $50s less than any where I looked.

MS Frontpage loves to create web pages that are only viewable from a MS Windows server by using IE. This compeletly throws away the original design of the world wide web as an open community accessible by everyone. If you want to make a webpage that everyone can view (only 70% of browsers are IE, 25% are Firefox, 5% Opera, netscape, Mozilla), then I suggest coding it by hand in straight XHTML with CSS for the design. You can pick up books on both subjects. I highly recommend this approach as it gives you a greater understanding of what is going on, and allows you to do more.

Keeping graphics URLs in Front Page?

This is sort of a moot point now, since I am not using Front Page anymore, but this was an existing page with existing images; I didn't do anything at all to the images or the references to them. Evidently when the program opened the file to edit it changed the image URL - maybe it downloaded the pictures too and linked to them on my computer instead - at any rate, when I uploaded the file the URL was wrong. I had a similar problem on Netscape Composer, although now it only does it for some images. I think I found a box that said don't change the original file, or something. I supposed there's something similar in Front Page but it must be buried deeper. And Lazygardens, I DID look at the help files. If it was that easy to find the answer I wouldn't have bothered writing to the forum. As with a lot of programs, if you don't already have some idea of how the program works, it's very hard to know how to frame the question to get the answer you need.
