I went to the staples site and entered my zipcode to find the store near me then from there you can view the local ad and in the ad you can see this actual advertisement and the other sales they have listed from May4th to May10th.
This was posted by someone on the other forum that just went

I dont know ravencajun, I dont have much faith in Compaq. I have seen more problems with people that have owned them than with possibly any other brand

You might look at gateways website. If you do much graphics the graphic's card in that model is the same one I have in my laptop and quite frankly its the bottom of the barrell minimum card for Vista. A quick look at gateway.com shows their 'M Series-X' with an upgraded graphics is actually about a $100 less. But hard drive is smaller,,, I didnt really spend time compairing other features. I wish I had a better graphics card and I seldom do any graphics to speak of. Windows Vista rating experience on my laptop is 3.2 out of 5.9 the reason is that intel intergrated graphics card. It's the slowest component on the list of items that they apply the Vista user experience rating with. Below 3 is not suitable for vista.

actually Big Lots is the one selling the stock from Circuit City which is closing out most of their stores so these are indeed new in the box brand new items just like you would find at the CC stores. I have bought many items computer related there for excellent prices and have been extremely happy with them, The cordless mouse I am currently using, the 3 usb hubs I have connected to my pcs, a memory card reader, some speakers, the kingston flash drives and several of the SD memory cards just to name a few so I personally must say I do and would buy there, with no negatives. My husband loves to go there to see what kind of great buys he can find on tools. when they are the ones handling the liquidation of brand name stores you really can get some great buys then. Recently they had a huge liquidation of Pier One Import items. I regularly shop there which is why I have signed up with their online buzz club to get the advance info for the sales. I have never had to return anything I purchased there. I know that it does depend on which area of the country and which stores but the ones here are all excellent and I would not hesitate to purchase there. IF they do have reconditioned items for sale it says it clearly on the package and also on the sale flyers, they did have some Dyson vacuums a while back which were all labeled as reconditioned. When they did the Eckerds liquidation I stocked up on my diabetes items like the lancets, alcohol pads, and got a great new electronic blood pressure monitor for dirt cheap, same one I had looked at in Eckerds in fact. But that is just my personal shopping experiences. If I did have the spare money I would love the HP lappy unfortunately I just got a new vehicle so I am broke LOL. there will be some awesome sales heading into the Black Friday time period.

The DDR3 is the latest type of memory and a 7200RPM hard drive is a real plus in a laptop. Many use a 5400RPM drive, so the 7200 is faster. You don't give all the specs, so can't say much more. For example, is the processor a 64bit or 32 bit processor. I'd advise to definitely get 64bit. Sounds like a good price. Some don't like HPs laptops, but I have one and like it just fine, much better than a Dell I had.

Well HP now owns Compaq and I have had extremely good luck with all my HP computers so the newer stuff that is HP owned Compaq might be a lot better than the old Compaq was.
I have no experience with Compaq nor have I heard many reports.

Maryanntx- that series of Acer (5315) here in Canada (having trouble with the Acer.com site) only has a Celeron processor and would only be good for the most basic of tasks. Its probably like putting a 4 cylinder engine in a full size pickup and wondering why it has no power. Still, the fact that any new laptop can be bought for under $400 is quite remarkable(we dont get those prices up here in Canada)

I love my HP/Compaq, they make a great PC and with AMD it's the Best1 also you can't beat online or 800# tech support Free for live, very easy to use like a chat and very nice helpful ppl.

anjk I would look for one that has a better processor the Celerons are the very low end of the scale. So I would stay away from the ones with Celeron.

the links in owbist post are for the version of that laptop with the intel dual core processor that is very different than the celeron processor version you posted asking about.

The dual core would be a much better choice however it is of course more expensive, well worth it though.
They seem to use the same model number with various processor choices which is a bit confusing.

Celerons just do not have much power especially if you will be using it in your office applications.
