HFGH front ceiling and door rails problem?

Putting the parts together was not a problem but the end result seems wrong.

When I start off with part #'s 25 and 27 flush on the right side then I add part # 24 then slide part # 26 tight to part # 27 Part # 26 hangs past part #24 by about a half inch or more

Should I loosen them up and slide the door rails to the right a litle bit to even out both overhangs Do I even need to be concerned?

I guess this bothers me because on page 7 instruction 3-A it says bla bla over the heads of the bolts on the plate until right end is flush, as shown above.

The diagram at the top of page 7 clearly shows the left side flush in the inset pic.

Other then this so far the instructions have been good as long as you go with firts instincts and not try to over think them.

I had forgotten this, but we found the same problem. We did loosen the bolts to readjust the parts and split the difference. I just checked our greenhouse, and we have roughly the same amount of part 26 sticking out past part 24, roughly 1/4", on both ends.

I'm not sure it would make much difference. I think we split the difference because at the time I was worried it might mean the doors wouldn't meet quite in the center if I didn't balance everything out on both sides. You're right, the instructions do say to make the right end flush, and that illustration at the top of page 7 does show a nice flush fit on the left side. Fitting flush on both sides doesn't seem possible with the parts they sent, so I guess this is just another case where the manual is goofy.

Also, I just checked the gap in the center of the track (as in your second photo) and our gap looks just as large or larger. It hasn't presented any problems as far as our doors operating smoothly.

Using first instincts helped us too. Sometimes our first instinct was to fling the manual into the bushes and ignore it for a while. That worked too. ;-)

jba3fan I'm not sure what to make of your dilemna--mine are perfectly aligned with the edges of the corner posts on both sides. Each of your pieces should be exactly 58" long--maybe one was cut wrong.

I agree with this; I think in general that the HF instructions get a bum rap here. It's very hard to do (to instructions that anyone can follow), especially for an "erector set" of widely varying parts as this, and while maybe *I* might have done a better job with them ;) my only problem was that I needed on several occasions to undo some post-tops to slide some more bolts down...

Perhaps if you had squared the frame to start with the doors would have worked. I read all this drama over the doors mine is in it's 4th season and the doors work fine. In the spring I can crack the doors and let in some cool air and they will stay in place can't do that with a swinging door a gust of wind would whip it around into the GH and tear something up. I mention to my wife that many people was installing swinging doors and she said I don't want them the ones we have work fine so if the little woman can slide them and no reason she can't they slide real easy. In my opinion the sliding doors are MUCH better than a swinging door that must remain latched or it will be tore off by the wind.

A recent update from the person who received the yucca is that it is green and doing well. The transplanted cholla are doing well, of course, but it will be a while before I know if any sacaton survived. We have been making progress but not as quickly as we hoped. (No surprise there! ;-) ) We have the foundation blocks for the outside beds in place up to ground level and filled with dirt. Pavers have been placed, but not yet leveled, between the existing shed and the north edge of the foundation. We have the water and electrical stubbed in. We have the SHCS tubes in place for the outside beds of the east greenhouse and hope to start filling that section soon with the removed dirt. We have removed all planned use of poured concrete from our plans and have made this planned structure possible to remove easily while still unlikely to be blown away. (Mostly due to bolting the foundation via J-bolts to rebar under bond beam cement blocks.) DH will be checking to see what type of permits/inspections we will need for electrical, water, and structures. I suspect that it will be just water and electric. We won't fill in any more until we find out. It is getting hot already so we will be putting in the outside structure and shade cloth before the central shed and greenhouses. That way we can work in the shade. :-)

Hi Willa, To work well, the top and bottom tracks need to be parallel and solid. I do have a wooden base under the steel GH base, and that might provide some stiffness to the bottom track. One idea is adding an extra brace to the frame right over the top of the doors, to stiffen up the top track. That seems to help the doors operate more smoothly too. We just added a piece of oak we had, but others folks have used a piece of EMT or aluminum angle in the same spot. The idea is to help prevent the top track from sagging at all if possible. (click to enlarge) Also, this is a good thing to check...there's a small illustration at the bottom of page 15 of the manual, labelled Side View. (Shown below.) This shows you that the small black plastic clip Part 51 has to be guided onto the bottom door track so the small vertical part of the aluminum track is actually threaded up into the vertical gap in the center of black plastic part 51. If you do it right, the bottom leg of the black plastic "L shape" goes down the front and under the L-shaped aluminum door track, as the illustration shows. If you don't install it just like the manual shows, it's actually possible to install the doors so that the black plastic part 51 is just sitting on top of the door track, sliding along in the small valley there. Although your doors can function (sort of) this way, they can also fall off, since they're not truly captured at the bottom in the manner the kit intends. My doors can't even be pulled off the track, top or bottom. I've honestly never seen anyone comment that the wheels can be pulled off the door itself, and there really shouldn't be that kind of pressure on the door to cause that at all...it makes me think something else is wrong with your door tracks (problem with your bottom track rising up?) or, with the black clip not being installed quite right, as in the illustration above. Hi Mark, congratulations! The vents on my 10x12 are my least favorite part of the greenhouse. I do have them all working, but they seem quite flimsy and the fit is rather fussy. They are noisy in wind. I do have a larger gap on the corner of the vent closest to the overlap of the roof crown pieces (parts 10 and 11) as you mentioned, although it seems to open and close OK. I am impressed you built it by yourself. It would have been very, very difficult for me to get this up without the good help of my husband. Those of you who go it alone get a tip of the hat from me. I ended up following oraylawsons idea about using an adhesive to attach the bottom door rail frame to the base frame. That worked out well. Boy, I totally missed this tip! Wish I had thought of that, I really don't like how loosely the bottom door frame slides and moves on the base frame. Our greenhouse is hot too. With the doors open and all vents open, my greenhouse is at least 120 lately (that's as high as my cheap thermometer goes, I suspect it's higher.) Ventilation and cooling are next on the list of challenges. I will keep my fingers crossed for you on the high winds issue (and crossed for us too.) With all the good modifications given on this site, I'm pretty confident things will go well. One of my concerns is what will happen when we get a big gust of wind when I have the doors and vents open for cooling. I can batten down the house and secure the doors for oncoming storms, but our random sudden wind gusts here are kind of uncharted territory. I hope you will keep us posted on how things go for you! Mudhouse, I guess I will just slide everythig ot have equal overhang on both sideds of parts 24 and 25, since it dosen't seem to cause a problem with the doors on yours.

Laserfan, You got me going ouside in the dark with a flash light and my tape measure, it turns out both pices are 58 inches long give or take 1/16th. I didn't want to get up on a ladder to check the top pices but one or both of them must be a little bit short. I guess I will have that figured out when I connect the door studs.

Also is there any reason why you added more bolts from the top instead of from the bottem?

Your pieces are the right length then. It looks to me simply that, based on your 2nd photo, you need to loosen the nuts and slide the track's two pieces to the left (looking from the inside) until the gap in photo 2 is exactly between the two bolts/holes.

I added bolts from wherever it was easiest. At the top I didn't have to fiddle with the post-to-base clip.
