lemon curd - factory made vs. home made

I had my first taste of lemon curd a couple of days ago and was not impressed. It was cloyingly sweet and the lemon flavour tasted fake, even though the ingredient list said it was made with real lemon juice. The stuff was the colour of Vaseline and had the thickness and gloppy texture of wet silicone sealant. This was factory made.

I know I can make better-tasting lemon curd, and I have a couple of recipes I'm going to try (both of which promise tartness), but I would like to ask those who have made lemon curd at home if I can expect the home made stuff to have the same horrible texture?
