Can we turn old Red Pine floors brown?

We're in the process of renovating our 150 year old farmhouse. The original red pine flooring has been exposed and stripped completely. It's beautiful wood, but our we had hope to end up with a brownish shade on the floors, therefore some stain will be needed. Our floor guys thinks that because of the age and condition of the floors, that a stain will just pool into the cracks and crevices and will be too streaky. We would therefore just go with a couple coats of polyurethane, which would bring out the reds of the pine.

Does anyone know of a way to make red pine more brown?
