Kentucky-Derby -Lost but what an experience!

Hi friends. Well first we did lose and everyone is very sad, the horse looked great in the paddock, only 9 of the owners were allowed to go in so I had to watch. The horse was fifth out of the gate and had great position but around the turn his heels got caught and we're waiting to hear if he is ok. Well the outfit looked great and everyone loved my hat. Everyone was coming up to me all day, one girl from a site "Herscene" took a picture and took my name not sure what site that is. One funny lady wanted to take a picture with me with her, that was weird but fun. One of my sons won 800.00 and was very happy. It was so exciting I was shaking when he was going in the gate. It was very muddy and very cold but an experience I will take with me forever. We went into a partnership with 6 horses, one died last year and the other 4 are fillys. Funny Feeling won a great race yesterday not the main race. I will download the picture with us holding the trophy. Guess what my camera died after 2 hours being here, even though I charged it. I certainly hope that Mission is okay. That muddy field made me nervous. He didn't win, but how thrilling that he was part of an exciting event.

Do you know when he'll race next?

I'll preface my comments by saying I have never grown an American wisteria - but do successfully grow both a Chinese and a Japanese wisteria as 'trees', and have read widely on wisterias in general. Peter Valder is considered one of the world's experts on them and his book on wisterias is the best thing I've seen (IMO there's a lot of nonsense written about them by people who've clearly never grown one successfully themselves!) Peter Valder (from Australia) appears not to have direct experience growing the American ones either but this is what he has to say about them: 'Flowering as they do on current year's growth, the American wisterias do not usually display their flowers well if grown on pergolas, though the long-racemed introductions of W. macrostachya may prove to be exceptions in this regard. In general, however, they are seen to best advantage against walls, around verandahs, over fences or as pillars on wooden or metal supports. Under these conditions they may be pruned to keep them within bounds at any time of year. However my experience with these plants is such that it would seem unwise of me to be dogmatic. I suspect, though, that two or three light prunings during the growing season may lead to greater floriferousness than a severe cutting back in autumn or winter.' Aunt Dee is a W. macrostachya (macrostachya means 'long spikes') so is of the kind he's saying would be suitable for a pergola. It is generally said that the long-racemed types display best on pergolas or grown as 'trees' with tall trunks so the flowers have space to dangle freely - how tall is your pergola? Could someone pass under it when the wisteria is in bloom without brushing through the flower racemes? (bees love the flowers!) Checking information on various US Extension university sites, pruning after the spring flowering is generally recommended. From my experience with wisterias, I'd say wait until spring flowering is over and them prune the whippy, curly new growth back into the desired framework as often as needed during the growing season to keep it neat and promote flowering. I suspect that even these 'new wood' flowering wisterias may develop the short woody spurs that bear a lot of the flowers. Pruning the new growth back regularly certainly promotes the development of those growths in the Asian wisterias so I'd guess that it would be good for the American ones too. The other thing I'd be sure to do is to remove and seed pods that you see after the leaves fall and the pods become visible. You really don't want them to seed themselves around. That is probably as true for the American ones as it is for the Asian ones - and perhaps even more so as the American ones are said to be hardier and, one would assume, therefore more likely to germinate well from seed!

Butter mixed with chipoltes in adobo sauce (just a bit) is a nice butter for those who like things spicy. I've done as Linda describes, letting people roll the corn in butter. Another option is to provide each person with a slice of bread, you butter the bread and then roll the corn on the bread. The hot corn melts the butter, the bread absorbs the melted butter no mess and the butter on the table stays firm and neat. You use the bread for your next cob and to touch up the corn when you want more butter.

Thank you for the compliments. I stayed up last night to learn how to post the picture but was unable to. Then this morning I was able but I forgot to write something. Yes those are my 3 children, one of my daughters just had a baby 2 months ago so she and her husband were unable to attend the wedding. That was at the end of the night of dancing and having fun. The dress remembered only cost me $30. WELL TO MAKE THINGS MORE DIFFICULT!!! I went to Lord and Taylor this morning and bought another dress, which I think is the one, I cant find it on the computer. It is a Tahari dress, sheath, stretch cotton with a collar like the one above, looked more like a day dress to me. I only wish I could find it on the internet, if not I will take a picture and download it. I was thinking of a medium sized black hat (which I had my heart set on) and dress it up with yellow, which and maybe a hint of red flower on the hat. Just a thought. I just want everyone to know how much you all have helped me. I was looking at the wrong type of dresses, hopefully I can find the dress and see what you all think.

Ah...the magic of the internet. Found them both. I have photos of both of these at home, too if you're interested. This first one is from Land O Lakes and is super easy. Really good, too! Southern Belle Bars Crust Ingredients: 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup LAND O LAKES Butter, softened 1/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup coarsely chopped pecans Filling Ingredients: 3/4 cup dark corn syrup 1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar 2 eggs 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup coarsely chopped pecans Heat oven to 350Â°F. Combine 1 1/4 cups flour, butter and sugar in large bowl. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in 1/4 cup pecans. Press crust mixture evenly onto bottom of ungreased 8 or 9-inch square baking pan. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes or until very light golden brown on edges. Meanwhile, combine all filling ingredients except pecans in small bowl; mix well. Stir in pecans. Spread evenly over hot, partially baked crust. Bake for 20 to 30 minutes or until filling appears set and knife inserted 1-inch from edge comes out clean. Cool completely; cut into bars. z, I don't read all the Conversation threads & somehow I missed the KD extravaganza! We haven't really chatted since photoshopping your house exterior 4 years ago (gosh, so long ago!) I saw your pic at herscene's among a sea of photos of pretty Derby dresses & hats. I feel like it's not my place to share it, will leave that up to you, but you look stunning! Understandable why they pulled you out of the crowd. ;)

I can't remember what you ended up wearing--I'll try to figure it out--and please post to let us know how Mission is. That must be very nervewracking. In the end, those horses are all great, great souls who try their absolute hardest and they're so fragile...I'll be hoping he comes out of it fine.

Mitch, the white dress, multicolored sandals and pink hat were for Friday's race. And z's horse won so she was in the winner's circle for that one.

I must say all of you make me very emotional. I feel like you are all my friends, how very nice of you to give me all these compliments but if it werent for all of you, I would have bought an inappropriate dress. Let me explain a little. First we got to the derby at noon, it was cold, damp and rainy, but I felt good about our horse, my hat and outfit so I just said I was going to make the best of it. My husband was a little crabby guess it was nerves, most of the men were stressed. We were going up the elevator and as I said this sweet girl wanted to take my picture but my husband was kind of rushing me said the lady was trying to sell me something. I just ignored him. When we finally came home he went on the site and found me, I hadnt had time to view it because my kids were over and we just put our 3 yr old granddaughter to bed it was her birthday today. I'm so happy I was able to have this experience and wanted to share the excitment with anyone who wanted to be a part of it. I havent had time to download the pictures but I cant wait to show you the picture of Pete and I holding a trophy. That was truly amazing. Cant imagine if MI won the derby. He isnt hurt there is a picture in the Kentucky newpaper that shows him about 4th around the first turn and Rajiv was turning looking behind him, could have been that time he should have been looking forward. No excuses, we must move on, the best horse won. We are not sure if he will be entered into the Preakness, I'll let you know. Meanwhile hopefully I can download the pictures. The hat was beautiful! I got compliments all day long, even men came up to me, it was comfortable and different and didnt see one like it, although I must say there were many many beautiful hats, especially where I was sitting. One of the partner's wives bought one for 750.00. It was a silk overlay and fitted perfectly for her head. I was just as happy with mine, bought it for 200. Thanks again, I cant wait to show you the rest of the pictures. Oh Hi Moonshadow, of course I remember you - you helped so much with my house. Talk to all of you soon.
