Carpet tiles over existing vinyl tiles?
Comments (1)I'd think there would be a possibility of a mold/mildew issue at the base of outside walls. Moisture tends to seep in there and furniture will hide it until you start looking for the source of a musty odor. I'd tend to go with a near-room-sized carpet, about 6" or so from the walls. Comments (2)I should have explained. The floor is typically more damp and cool than the surrounding air. Carpet prevents air circulation next to the cool damp surface and the carpet will also be cooler and damper than the surrounding air. Organic stuff collects in the carpet. Mold happens. Have you considered removing the vinyl and staining the concrete? You can make it LOOK warmer....See MoreMarmoleum Click over possibly asbestos-containing vinyl tile?
Comments (3)You may want to talk to your state's Dept. of Natural Resources and ask about their regulations on asbestos removal practices. You might be surprised, depending on where you live, at how seemingly simple it is to comply with asbestos removal regulations, methods of removal and disposal as a homeowner. For a 4x4 area, I would try to remove the existing underlayment and all layers of tile at once and not cut into the potential asbestos containing tile and adhesive. This should be able to be done if there are no walls or built-ins on top of the existing floor. Once you get down to the sub-floor, install a nice, clean piece of underlayment grade underlayment and install your Marmoleum sheet or Click product. Plan it so that the new floor and the existing hardwood are the same height and use a custom made transition or one that Marmoleum produces for use with their floors (yes, respect expansion). This is my quick, knee jerk answer to this flooring dilemma. Follow the Marmoleum instructions to the letter. The sheet goods especially have some special instructions that should not be overlooked or minimized. Cutting the hole for the toilet: drill a hole in the click plank, set your jigsaw in it and cut to and around the traced line you have marked to indicate the size and location of where the toilet will be in relation to the tile....See Moreinstalling schluter ditra over vinyl tile over basement concrete
Comments (7)Using ditra you can go right over it, just follow ditra guidelines and you will never have a problem especially when existing vinyl tiles installed on concrete. Keep in mind that Ditra allows dissimilar materials to act independently of each other this why the tile or grout will never crack even if there is differential movement between the subfloor and the tile. We used ditra over asbestos tiles installed in the kitchen about 6 yrs ago over an old wood floor in a house that was built in the 20s and there was no issues then and there is no issues a year ago when I was there doing a deck repair. Good luck...See Morefloorman67
