DH and I have overachieved on hamburger buns. We have LOTS! What else can we have on hamburger buns besides hamburgers, cheeseburgers and sausage sandwiches?

Sloppy joes, chicken salad, ham salad, grilled Taylor pork roll, shrimp salad, bratwurst patty....and I have even cut buns into pieces brushed with melted butter and sprinkled with a mix of garlic powder, pizza seasoning, grated parmesan and toasted in the oven.

Grace, I make the dough in the dough cycle of the bread machine, so it rises once there. I take it out and divide it into eight pieces, then shape all of them into buns. I put two onto a baking sheet and let them rise a second time, then bake them. The rest I put on a separate sheet and stick in the freezer till they harden, then put them into a vacuum-seal bag and back into the freezer. I take them out as needed two at a time, reseal the rest into the bag. Thaw the frozen ones covered with a towel on a baking sheet, then glaze them with egg wash, sprinkle seeds on them, and bake. You don't need to vacuum-seal them--I just suspect they keep better that way. If I think about having burgers for dinner sometime in the afternoon, I can take them out, thaw them, and bake them by dinnertime.

hehe this is one I can answer ! I have two Bunnings nearby, and seem to end up at one or the other most weeks. In my area (south east ish suburban Melbourne ) Bunnings can get bare root ("body bag") roses as early as late May-June. As a rule, these tend to be really cheap end roses; think well out of patent classic/popular hybrid teas similar to Mr Lincoln , Eiffel Tower, Julias rose, Just Joey etc or floribundas like white iceberg, europeana, Bonica and lilli marlene. But they do get a few of the older more obscure Austins. In previous years I have seen Yellow Charles Austin, The Dove, Perdita, Claire Rose, Cymbeline, Tamora, lucetta, Happy Child etc, It seems to be luck of the draw, because different stores have different varieties..To be honest, I ended up chucking a lot of the body bags of mine, as they were either dud plants, not suitable for my area and didn't grow well, or they were bought in a bargain induced frenzy and were just..wrong.. My advice is to look up all the older austins and make a checklist of ones you would like, so you can avoid the ones you don't have room for. Still have Cymbeline tho..shes lovely. and its a good way of experimenting on the cheap. Last year they were all around 9.95 (year before they were 8.95 I think), They usually have higher priced more popular PBR roses nearby ( think Pierre Ronsard, Ebb Tide, burgundy iceberg, etc). I think they were around 12.95? Warning- They dont tend to be very good quality , so check them thoroughly for dodgy canes etc, try to get a good look at the graft area, and you have to get them early, as the best ones go very quickly. I think they just get the one shipment, and the rest stay till they get sold...One cane wonders abound! Keep an eye out for the Delbards - they seem to appear a couple of weeks later as "potted barerooted" for around $ 16 /18. That is, bareroots that appear to have been potted in the minimum sized pot available. They look to be a bit better quality with more and thicker looking canes. Either Delbards is keener on quality control, or the plants keep better that way.

Thank you Sharon. It was a highlight of our trip to Canada to spend the day with you and "himself"! We also loved meeting you both on your Route 66 trip. I've definitely been enriched by knowing (and some virtual friends too) Annie, Lars, Eileen, Sherry, Peppi, David, Karen, Katie, Cathy, Sharon, Maureen, Carol (Dishesdone), Diana, and Helene. ( Apologies to those that I've missed listing). Callen is so perfect! He appears to be the most content little love! Even though my grandsons are now tween and teen, (and driving me insane right this minute) , I wouldn't trade the title of Nini for anything!

Joanie, I've made Jenny's no-knead bread and her advice to get a good oven thermometer is spot on. I'd always assumed my oven was at the right temp when it beeped. I discovered it wasn't at all. It will eventually hit the right temp, but it takes a good 10-15 minutes longer. Since the bread doesn't bake that long, it's really important it's at 450 from the get-go. I have three dutch ovens and the best bread came from the old beat up plain black one.

Put them in your blender a little garlic and parsley and you have homemade breadcrumbs!

I always use hamburger buns to make stuffing. You can also freeze them for future use. When you want to use them just take them out and let sit at room temp. for several hours to thaw.

One of our favorites is buffalo chicken - sauteed chicken finished in Frank's Hot Sauce and butter, on a bun with lettuce and blue cheese dressing.

Sorta close to burgers but meatball sandwiches topped with fried onions, fried peppers and shredded moz aren't the worst thing that can happen to you! Well maybe my cardioligist would disagree but .... Yum!

I like all kinds of sandwiches on hamburger buns (good ones, that is).

However, if they get past really using on sandwiches, but aren't spoiled, I've always preferred bread puddings with more crust than you get from sliced bread. It give the pudding a more interesting texture. Of course, my fav bread for bread puddings are croissants. Insult to injury, in for a penny, in for a pound, all that...but gosh croissant bread puddings are tasty. :D

Its a New Jersey thing, Boo. But some expats like Linda have brought it west. You can't go into a New Jesey diner and not find it on the brekfast menu! A nice alternative is fried bologna :)

Grilled chicken breast sandwiches - sprinkle the chicken with Jerk seasoning before you grill it, then add a slice of Colby cheese over the top when it's done along with lettuce, tomato and red onion. Serve with red potato oven fries and Ranch dressing. Yummy :-)
