Problem with Fine Cooking DVD

I put the Fine Cooking DVD on my birthday list and was thrilled when DH came through! Unfortunately I was dismayed with the product. Basically is has 96 thumbnails of all of the 15 years of issues, but no general index! You can search an ingredient, but what comes up are the various issues where the ingredient is featured. In order to see the recipe options you have to open each and every one of those issues (in the case of searching boneless chicken, 13 issues appeared...hard to believe that boneless chicken is an ingredient in only 13 out of 96 issues) and look at the contents page (which also includes recipes not related to your ingredient). I think $100 is a lot to pay for this DVD and without the index, it simply isn't worth it.

I googled for a FC index & I think there is a way to search an index online (and I could also buy another DVD for the index only for $35-40), but frankly it just isn't worth it!!!! I feel ripped off and am returning the DVD for a refund.

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for. But if it is then maybe you can keep the DVD.

Fine Cooking Index.

It looks like you can type in an ingredient and it gives you a list of recipes, the issue and the page.

Thanks, ann_t, for that web index. I didn't have any trouble searching the FC DVD, unlike the OP, but the web index gives a quicker way to review the article titles to determine which one of the search results is most likely to be what I'm looking for.

I agree they could have done a better job indexing this, however. It seems to be a lost art these days - sad how many of today's cookbooks are so poorly indexed compared to "old style" ones of the '70's and earlier.

Thanks again everyone. I successfully cooked six hard boiled eggs this morning !! I hear the applause. smile. I brought them to a boil and then simmered for 15 min. I will have to experiment a little more with bringing the heat down from the boil. I lowered it immediately to 3 and of course it quit boiling so I had to go back to 9 and bring it down two levels at a time...I will experiment next time to make that easier. Pllog I never heard of steaming until reading about it here (where have I been? not to the cooking forum for a while :-) ) and I definetly want to try that. And, I looked at Henrietta and I must say that I really like that...I have never owned an electric egg cooker but that is sure cute. Might have to spring for one. And, Cheril thanks for letting me know about the Williams Sonoma item. I have seen those before and will keep it in mind. I think once I do this a couple times, I will have the exact schedule...or I will get Henrietta. So cute. Thanks for all the fun reading. You guys are great.

When you insert your CD I assume the activity light on the DVD player is activated for a few seconds? Your DVD would undoubtedly have the auto start feature where your photo CDs would not. So try right click on Start, click Explore in the pop up. Now look down the left side for your CD/DVD player and click on that to highlight. Hopefully all your photos or folders on that CD will now appear in the right side of your screen.

Borrow someone's working stereo amp and speakers. Plug the white and red wires audio cables from the DVD player into the stereao's AUX inputs. Leave the S-Video plugged into DVD player and TV. Play the DVD. If the audio is now fine, you have a CRT TV problem. If the audio is still crappy you either have a bad DVD player or still have bad audio cables. Good Luck.

You know, years ago consumer electronics were built like appliances - hardware that was designed to work as specified when built and sold. Occasionally, after the hardware design and release, problems would arise and "technical service bulletins" would be issued by the manufacturer and problems would be fixed, usually under warranty. Later on, with firmware (computer software) now controlling products, manufactures could make fixes with a firmware upgrade and avoid costly hardware changes. Next came, "why should we wait on releasing this product, when we can do it now and finish it up in firmware upgrades later that the customer can/has to do later on?" So now, with Blu-ray, we have both hardware manufactures and Blu-ray DVD authoring facilities and replicators, all taking the same approach - make the customer figure it out and try to correct it with firmware upgrades. It's the same mentality used in the computer industry to make their failings your responsibility to figure out and resolve. OK! Off my soapbox now! Sushipup, try doing a firmware upgrade from the onscreen menus, with an internet connection, and see if the manufacturer has not already addressed the hardware/software conflict. If, when trying to perform an upgrade, it fails, try downloading the appropriate file to a USB thumb drive or CD-R instead and installing that way - the mfg website will usually provide a text file describing how to do this.

Hi! I am new to the forum and have a quick question.

Due to space restrictions, I am looking to get rid of my entire collection of FC and gettig the dvd instead. It has taken a lot of time and money to get every single issue and don't want to get rid of the collection unless I be absolutely sure that this dvd has the entire magazine reproduced including photos.

Does the dvd have the entire magazine reproduced, including photos?

Thanks!

Yes, photos, advertising, everything from page 1 of Issue I through all issues thereafter.

You won't get the special issues sold separately, like "Grilling" or whatever, but most of those are compilations of previous recipes anyway.

I have kept selected issues. There's the "physicality" of having the magazine in hand. But with the software you can print out any page exactly as it appeared in the original magazine.

I had every issue until 2007, but due to time, weight, space restrictions, we culled them in our move. I've been undecided about getting this CD, and now I think I'm more undecided than ever!
