problem with dvd-cd drive.

Hi, My Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-112D 1.06 is not reading the CD disks I had previously burned with it using Nero Burner. It does not even recognise that a CD is in the drive.

My DVD recordings work fine, no problems there.

I unfortunately have all my pictures saved on CD-RW,

Anyone shine a light on my problem please.

When you insert your CD I assume the activity light on the DVD player is activated for a few seconds? Your DVD would undoubtedly have the auto start feature where your photo CDs would not. So try right click on Start, click Explore in the pop up. Now look down the left side for your CD/DVD player and click on that to highlight. Hopefully all your photos or folders on that CD will now appear in the right side of your screen.

One reason I haven't bought some of the gardening CDs I crave is that they aren't for North American consumption. Some really good gardening stuff from Britain is only available for the British/European format. (The Quest for the Rose had this problem for a video, way back when) Could your source have gotten the reader that works in another part of the world?

Coho, I posted on the other thread before I saw this. Several years ago, I purchased a computer that had Norton installed. I could not burn a DVD on that computer until after I removed every trace of Norton. When I called Tech support at Norton, they told me that it was a known problem, and sent me a refund check. That was many years ago however, and I wouldn't think they would still be having that problem.

I would check the ribbon cable myself. First I would ensure the current cable is seated nicely and the coloured strip is on the pin 1 side. If that does not resolve it try a different ribbon cable. Did you use the new one that came with the second DVD player? The newer ones are 80 wire rather than the older 40 wire cable. Where do you have the jumper set to on the DVD - Master, Slave or Cable select?

Mike, I have an Inspiron 1545 - is this what you mean? Let me know if you need more info. I would still like to download the driver for my laptop, but how do I do that? I do consider myself "adventerous", but not when it comes to computers, haha. owbist: thanks so much for the info, but like I told Mike, I don't feel comfortable when working on the hardware in computers. This morning I'm NOT able to burn a CD, but right before that I was able to play a movie. I don't know what is going on. Now I'm sure I'm not able to watch a movie either. So, how do I "download" this driver file. I see it, and it is actually in my download folder, but when I try to download it, it says there are no files to download. When it says download, it says "save file", not RUN, like I want it too. Any suggestions on this? Thanks! I appreciate all the advice.

Thanks, I can now unload my pictures from the disk and re-burn them on DVD.
Cannot understand why the drive won't recognise the CD though.

Its either possible that the laser eye in your optical drive is dirty or, that the drive is on its way out and needs replacing. It sounds more like the latter

If Gene is right and your DVD player/burner is toast they are very cheap these days. TigerDirect has name brands for $25 to $30. They are very simple to install and it would cure the problem in a hurry.
