Please give me your workshop ideas

We have been tossing the idea back and forth about having a workshop for my husband's woodworking hobby. He currently has to work out of one side of our two-car garage (and I insist on keeping my car in my half at night), so he is always having to clean up and/or rearrange tools and projects at the end of the day. He has some good storage, as well as a bandsaw, lathe, planer, and a convertible table saw. What would be your dream (within reason - we're not talking fantasy here! -- workshop? What ideas do you have for a workshop, i.e., size, height, concrete or wood floor, storage, loft space, etc.?

being that it is a wood workign shop, i would say go with whichever floor is cheaper since you will never see it anyway!

he needs to look at how much room he REALLY needs. it could be a small 12x12 or it could be 20x20. best bet is for him to setup for a big project and jsut see.

my shop has an open ceiling and i store my wood on it. even though i don't have a steep pitched roof, there is still a couple feet clearance and it is easy enough to put most wood up there. for long boards i stack them outside under a tarp.

ideally he would want dedicated space for each power tool. though the table saw can be easily rolled out of the way most of the time.

Thanks davidandkasie.

I was thinking it would have to be at least the size of 1/2 of a 2-car garage, possibly with AC and heat. What about outlet placement? Are the walls finished with sheetrock and/or insulated? I would suspect we would need city permit to build either with a concrete foundation or if the building is over a certain size.

Any other suggestions?

dapper, You sure can use Mushroom compost in March and I'm not sure why Cowgirl says that it will heat up if you pile it up. I watched an episode of Dirty Jobs a couple years ago where they were at a Mushroom Farm. The way they made they're compost was simple. It was Horse manure, lots of Straw, Urea and water. The Urea and water was used to get the process started then they turned it everyday until the pile became that nice dark stuff we call compost. Here's the thing... If the stuff Mushroom farms were using wasn't finished, I'd say it could get hot if piled up, but I don't see how any compost will get hot if it's finished. And if it's not finished and you want to stop the heating process, you could add some Lime. I've seen Mushroom compost (I've got a few mushroom farms around me) and the stuff looks like super rich and dark dirt. There's also a place that resells spent Mushroom compost and I've never seen any of their piles steaming.

It should sell for 1/2 the price that replacements is selling for...and that's more than replacements would give you for it. At auction, sets of things, furniture, dishes glasses etc are often sold by "per piece" or "take it all". Almost always the seller gets more money on "per piece" mainly because serving pieces are more and that's sometimes all someone wants....and other times it's the everyday cups and plates that people want. I would place an ad "$17.50 per 5 piece place setting, 8 available, $125 for all 8 placesettings" and price the serving pieces accordingly. Linda C

Looks like a very nice home, but it feels rather cold, and doesn't make the spaces feel as large as it might. Hang all your stuff with Command hooks, and mention it as an asset so no nail holes! Check IKEA or BigLots or resale places for some lamps. You need the light and warmth as mentioned by another poster. Foyer - lamp on table, mirror hung over table. Runner in the entry to bring people into the space, and also not make them feel crowded in by the door, which the small rug does. Get rid of the curtain and rod on the window. Kitchen - change out all the hardware to black iron. It will link the color of the appliances, and make your cabinets feel more up-to-date than the dated hardware does now. Otherwise, I think the kitchen is fine. LR - Lean a mirror or art on the mantel, or hang with command hook. Rotate the sectional so one side is on the left side of the fireplace, the other faces the fireplace. Move the TV to the wall where the sectional was. Bring in the bulky desk from the second bedroom and put it under the half wall. Add a floor lamp, a desk lamp. Take down the sheers- they only accentuate the different sizes of the window and slider. Take these drapes down, and trade them for the ones in the second and third bedrooms. Those bedroom drapes don't go at all in those rooms, but the red ones from the LR might work better. The ones in the bedrooms should be fine in the LR. Master - Put the bed on the wall where the dresser is now. Move the dresser to the current bed wall. Take the armoire and angle in the corner where the window wall and the new dresser wall meet. Add a lamp on the nightstand, one on the dresser. Other bedrooms - as mentioned above. Be sure they each have at least one lamp in them, either on the nightstand or dresser. Get rid of the sheers, especially if they are the flowered ones. If the quilt in the 3rd bedroom is reversible, do it - something plainer is better. Be sure to add a pillow sham there. Borrow one from the second bedroom - too many on there anyway. Make the beds. The whole turned down sheet thing is kind of sloppy imo, and I don't really want to see someone's sheets. Take the plant that is overhanging the stairs and put it on the ledge in the kitchen. It is creepy hanging down in the foyer, and too skimpy to be effective. Best of luck for a quick sale!

Things got very hectic with Thanksgiving, Black Friday sales, etc. but I did want to take a moment to thank everyone for sharing their tables and to show you what I decided with mine. lv_r_golden: I'm swooning over the fall leaf theme--which gave me some inspiration for my kids' table. ladypat: Your small votive candles around the table make it look so warm and inviting. I tried to recreate that look, but didn't work for me, though, at last minute. Perhaps next year. gsciencechick: Lovely crystal! Do post pics of your new french doors. awm03: I'm in love with your dining room. The pairing of that table and chairs is truely inspirational. Joann: Your daughter has a lovely home and table. I'm so envious of her large dining room table! I ended up following Linda's advice to arrange the pumpkins on a tray. I added the fall leaves and pinecones that my DDs collected and came up with this: The I added a bouquet of flowers to the buffet: Here is what I came up with for the kids' table: Mine 9-year-old DD helped to arrange the leaves and pinecones for their centerpiece: Remember my friend who added a last minute guest? She gave me the prettiest hostess gift of two bird candles. I added them to my pumpkin centerpiece like so: I am now wondering how I can update this centerpiece for a Christmas look. I think I can use the birds and pinecones, but I need to swap out the pumpkins and leaves for something else. Any suggestions? Also, what can I do with the pumpkins now when I am done for them?

30x30, concrete slab, with a second story having an equally large open room, trimmed to look like our home.
Fantasy Question- What could be better than a 6 car garage
Answer- one with a 6 car gameroom upstairs complete with kitchenette, bar, bathroom, and gas log fireplace.

IMO, you shouldn't go any less than 16x16, 20x20 would be much better. Either way go for a concrete slab. You'll never ever regret the money the slab cost. I wouldn't worry about sheetrock and AC, that can come anytime down the road.

We live in a horse community with acre + lots where pratically everyone has built some sort of workshop/garage/outbuilding on their property, none of which are exactly the same, as everyone's needs are different.

In our case we put up a 34' X 34' building with wood working space on one side (front) and an oversized single garage on the other side (front) and two (2) large storage rooms in the back, behind the workshop/garage areas.

We really don't need the extra garage right now but we figured it made sense to include a space for a car or boat for resale purposes. Meanwhile, we plan to stain the concrete floor and use the space as a game room since we've never had space for a pool table in our house.

The storage rooms will be used in place of the attic over our attached garage, which has stairs to climb and too small an opening to store very large boxes or furniture. It is my belief you can never have too much storage space, even if you're not a packrat. We usually have a stock of home improvement supplies for an upcoming project to store (currently bathroom sinks, cabinets, tile, and faucets) and all of our Christmas decorations - especially the outdoors stuff.

Even though we're not allowed to build separate 'living quarters' on our property, some of my neighbors use their 'workshops' as home offices, craft rooms, art studios..........the sky is the limit. Have fun!
