Banging Noise in Chimney

I'm renting an old house (built early 1900s, Folk Victorian) and don't know alot about it's physical history or structure. It's heated by water and had old metal radiators.

My question: Since early-mid October (a week or so after I turned on the heat), I've been hearing banging or hitting noises in the outside wall of my bedroom. It seems to be coming from where the chimney is. I thought at first it might be trees hitting the bricks - it seems to come at the same time as big gusts of wind) but I pruned them and the noise is still there. I know next to nothing about chimneys (or how old chimneys connect to new heating water heaters) and can't find any good info on the web, so I'm hoping someone will be able to tell me what sort of noises old chimney's make, why, and how to stop it. Or, alternatively, what can make a banging noise in my wall, if not the chimney (animals?).

The noise is driving me crazy! Understanding it would make me feel so much better! Thanks.

when you had the new furnace / boiler installed they did not bleed the air out of your system. that causes the noises since the vent is attached to the chinbey it creates a sound path from the boiler. It did not make any noise till the cooler weather and heat came on Get a hold of the furnace company and request your heating zones be purged of air

I had the same problem with my vented gas fireplace and found someone that recommended auto firewall rubber. This can withstand a tremendous amount of heat. I purchased two, 2 fireplaces, patches of it off amazon and stuck them to the top of my stacks. This worked out GREAT!! It has been over a year and they are still attached. The adhesive is industrial strength. Now all I need to do is solve the wind sound on windy days. Hope this helps!

Thanks janey I love my house too. I am just really glad only one section is flat. Yes the technology and products today are far superior to what was on the roof but we never had any problems at all with the roof till we had torrential rains for days with no break. It just can't keep up. Plus this, roof is quite old so all in all I think we got good use from it. With the warranty we have on the new one I don't think we should have any problems. We probably won't be here anymore. We made sure we got a fully transferable one to in case we sell. Jasdip no metal on flat roofs and I did ask about it on the rest of the house but our slope was right on the line of not qualifying plus the cost is almost double. I love metal roofs. The flat roof we are getting is exactly what they install on large commercial buildings, it's a very thick rubbery material that is heat welded at the seams. I wish I could have afforded new skylights, would like the ones that have a remote control and can open for ventilation. But 4 of them were just too much.

installing noise reduction in rangehood chimney cover, good or bad

I was thinking of installing some sort of noise reduction inside the chimney hood cover around the duct work. probably some sort of combination of rock wool, mass loaded vinyl or Sonopan. Is this totally crazy, a waste of time?? thoughts
