I have a message on this page about a problem similiar to this. I found a transition that you place under the tile, with a pivot type thing up to the wood.

I'm not going to use it. I've actually decided on the wood transition, but here is the link. Look at the Reno V. We've decided that we're going to ask them to make the tile as high as the wood.

have your ceramic guys use a thicker notched trowel to make the transition as close to flush as possible with the wood.

The added mortar will heighten the cernaic finish level so it can be the same as the wood.

floorman67, wouldn't you have to raise it up quite a bit, to get it to the same level as 9/16" hardwood?

it's the standard way flush transitions are addressed in new tile and hardwood isntallations without placing other products under the tile to create a ramp that may or may not sacrifice the stability of the installation in the future.

it depends on the thickness of the tile itself.

what do you consider "quite a bit" ?

also it needs to be asked, do you really want a ramp under your tile ?

if you have a 1/4" tile with a setting bed made from a 1/4" notched trowel, the total thickness comes in just below a half inch.

Using a 3/8" notched trowel increases that by 1/8"

Using a 1/2" notched trowel increased that by 1/4"

Plus with thinset you can squeeze the tiles down and butter them up alot more effectively to achieve the flush transition.

this doesnt necessarily have to be accomplished throughout the entire install. It could be spread accross the last few rows to accomplish the flush transition. Mortar sticks to mortar alot better than any 3rd prty ramping product.

This is the way flush transitions are supposed to be accomplished in tile isntalls.

Thank you floorman67. The tile is about 1/4". So a 1/4" thinset would work. Thinset is about 1/8", so I would be raising up another 1/8" in the last few rows?

1/4" troweled thinset squeezes down to about 3/16" or so .. a little more or less depending on how a installer sets them.

Our crews always have 1/4", 3.8", and 1/2" trowels and use whatever they need at the time to bring it flush.

It all depends on the way you set the tile and how far you squezze it down into the thinset.

To get it exact try a test piece at the wood to see what works best for your flush transition.
