new subfloor?

I wanted to put porcelain tile in the kitchen while redoing it. Pulled up the old vinyl and found that we have 1/4 plywood base with 3/4 particleboard on top. All I've read have said this isn't good. The house is 30+ years old. We were told we could put laminate floor and leave the subfloor or pull it down to the joists and put new 3/4 plywood subfloor in. What do you think is the best way to go? Also, was told if putting in new subfloor, use tongue and groove. Is this right? Thanks for any info!
