It is probably considered total sacrilege and everyone will throw tomatoes :-) but if real lino is out of the budget, a lady named "kgwlisa" put a downright gorgeous kitchen floor in her Queen Anne using vinyl composition tile (VCT) from Armstrong. It is dirt cheap (something like 69 cents per 12x12 tile) but has very much the look of lino tile, and her design is right on target. I've linked to a thread over in Home Decorating showing photos of it, they're down at the end of the thread. This is most likely what we're going to use in our kitchen once we've scraped together the money to redo it since we'll be on a bare bones budget. BTW, although it was less common than wood (which OP has already said was not an option) tile was indeed used in kitchens in homes of that era for reasons of "sanitation", and the obsession with same was in full swing by 1897, since it could be scrubbed with harsh cleaners. Most common were small mosaics (hexagons, octagons, or squares, which can be obtained quite cheaply if you hunt, and gray grout please) but 6-8" unglazed/matte-glazed quarry tiles (also can be had inexpensively, unglazed quarry tiles need periodic sealing) were also used. Daltile also makes a lovely brick-look tile that I would consider for a floor if it were appropriate to the rest of the kitchen; the style name is "Union Square". I don't know how expensive that is though. The oft-suggested (and also oft-debated about whether it's actually period correct) black-and-white checkerboard is a beeyatch to take care of. Every bit of schmutz shows up - the dark crud is obvious on the white, light-colored debris glows like a beacon on the black. Jane Powell's "Bungalow Kitchens", like "Bungalow Bathrooms", is poorly named - the information in it doesn't just apply to bungalows, it covers pretty much the whole period from 1890-WWII, and there is a TON of meticulously researched information in it. It's different. But like an orange tie-die shirt and a black and white houndstooth check skirt ... they don't bring out the best in each other. That pairing brings a whole set of design problems with it: you have a cool color scheme with the tile and the marble - blue and grey undertones. Then you bring in a big surface with strong yellow/reddish tones and undertones. Whatever finish you pick for your cabinets will either clash with the floor and tile or the countertop. Whatever paint color you pick for the walls will clash with tiles or countertop. If you want a strong swirling countertop, look for something in the same color family as the marble tiles ... a dramatic black and white soapstone, a granite, but with cool undertones (no pinky-beige or yellowish tinges). Or go warm all around: a rust and cream basketweave tile, a cream/gold based marble and the Typhoon Bordeaux countertop.

Ty everyone! Hi Alisa! Yes..we have a painter who is spraying our cabinets this Fri and Sat. He already has all of our doors/drawers at his shop. As per his request I have to stick with a sherwin williams paint otherwise I would have tried the Benjamin Moore Chantilly lace.

As you can see, these are pros commenting on your post (I am not). These particular pros are very well known on this forum for their good sense. Since you seem very focused on simply choosing the tile (and do not seem interested in changing anything else in this tiny space), I think that if you want something just to be an improvement over what you have, and you are worried about aesthetics, then you need to re-read my response above recommending that you take the hallway laminate sample to an actual tile store for help in person. I stand by my advice for a neutral, warm color with matching grout. And yes, I do agree that this bathroom is due for a total re-do. You have to actually SEE the tile in person. Even if you order from the internet, you should see a sample first. And your floor area is so very tiny, that almost any tile you choose will be reasonable in price. If price is a major concern, then perhaps you can also consider a simple, white solid sheet flooring. It would be easy to keep clean, and probably the easiest to install (I'm told).
