Call Fred Flinstone and tell him his fireplace is missing? Sorry, that really is a pretty ugly fireplace. Is that stone on the top portion or is it tile that can be removed? I think I'd investigate what's under the top portion before I proceeded. If it's tile that's been built out, remove it and see if you can minimize the top portion. the proportion is way off, if you can minimize the top in some way you may be able to balance the fireplace out.

You can get bricks put over it to make it look nicer... my friends who have a huge beautiful home, just had round brick put up fromt he fireplace all the way up to the ceiling... expensive, but awesome looking.

Interesting: does the open corner firebox work for you? I've never seen one I really liked. My sister's makes me crazy, but its on a flat wall and the lack of symetry ruins the whole space.

Looks to me like the travertine[?] above was probably added after the fact, in a mis-guided attempt to update it. That would explain why it sticks out so much further, and doesn't match the stone below.

Removing that would be my first priority: strip it down to the bones, and see just what you have to work with.

But unless the open corner makes sense in your space, I'd probably rip the whole thing out and start over.

You think YOUR'S is ugly. Look at my behemoth! The fake stones are purple, gray and black. I like your's much better. ;)

I want to put cultured stone up there, but I'm afraid of what it will cost. Maybe someday.
