Thanks to everyone for their input. So, we painted it the same as the trim. Here's what it looks like now! We'll paint the gold trim black another day. This refurb took a lot out of us!

You mean the whole surround ? IMO I would leave it as is but I need to see your space to understand the reason for the change. I do not see the trason for the hearth since it appears you have a gas FP and I would wait until you can remove the carpet and replace with new floor before doing anything to the FP

I don’t know if you will go for this color, but it is absolutely perfect for fleeting daylight. It is also a winner with Revere Pewter and white or off whites. It is a color which can be cute or sophisticated, depending on furniture and fabrics. B.M. Violet Pearl. Work in, with throw pillows, the color of your rug,the Moroccan style of it, with a like fabric.
