Help me fix an ugly kitchen on a budget
Comments (32)I think your kitchen is honestly not as bad as you think. So my advice with projects like yours is to make your list of the things that bother you the most, and roughly how expensive and difficult they are to fix, and ONE BY ONE fix the things that bother you the MOST and are LEAST expensive and/or difficult to fix. There is no hard and fast formula. It's basically an approach that urges you to go slow and tackle the projects that give you the most impact per dollar. aka, prioritize. The idea is that most people think they have to fix, say 7 things to stop hating their kitchen. But in reality, after 3 or 4, the other things won't bother you. Then stop! And you won't have bought materials or committed to contractors or demoed those other projects. Once you do the work on the bathroom, and perhaps other unexpected things you may need to do around the house, you can go back and decide whether to finish your list. Or to save your money for retirement, kids education, your next home or a more extensive renovation. Me? I'd clean everything, paint the cabinets (I have gray cabinets and like them a lot) and wainscoting. I don't mind the floor, but you don't like it, so that's a priority for you. I took some of the doors off my cabinets for an open-shelving look -- it's nice for glasses and things you use a lot. You could replace a couple with glass doors for some variety -- if you find that appealing. Enjoy you new home!...See MoreHelp me decorate my ugly living room!
Comments (25)Definitely like the love seat in front of the window. I would put an end table with a lamp on it between the sofa and love seat, put a sofa table behind the sofa that has its back to the entry, keep the TV above the fireplace but lower it. I like a symmetrical look and if you put the TV on either side of the fireplace it would throw that off. Decide what colors you want to accent with and use those colors in art work, drapes/panels and accessories. If you do use drapes, mount the rod higher and wider than the window. You have a great room it just needs some tweaking....See Moremy ugly new kitchen needs your help
Comments (14)I agree about the wall paint color being awful. I actually like the backsplash. It has personality without being trendy. I consider green to be an almost neutral color. If the red tiles are just too much for you, I would consider removing just the red ones. Maybe replace with mosaics in shades of green and white? The counters are really pretty. Personally, could not live with black cabinets. Even thought I'm a little weary of looking at pictures of white cabinets, I would paint the cabinets white and also paint the walls in some shade of just off-white that compliments the green....See MoreHelp me hide my neighbor's ugly house!
Comments (14)I’m happy that my suggestion of an aerial trellis has been so well received! I’ll add a bit of detail for @rachel12reed & anyone else who may try to replicate a version of it. We have another one of these along a side fence in our back yard - it is only two sections & no center feature in it. It has low plants in front of it with curved iron structures filling in under it instead of shrubs. The decorative iron can be easily seen when this tree is not in leaf. The bigger 3 section one has a leaded glass window in center which is lit at night. These weren’t DIY - the folks who installed our pavers & water feature built them. They are very beefy & heavy duty - 10’ timbers sunk in cement & wood wrapped. The bigger one has shrubs filling in the two side sections now which hide the fence. Here’s the smaller one - you can see that it serves the purpose of screening from our neighbors who have a yard that is higher than ours. you can see the fence sloping on right side of tree. This fence is also 6’ tall. The neighbors were thrilled when we had this built. Their house is higher than their yard & several levels of patio. This was a win win for us & them....See Morekatrina_ellen
