Please help! Renovating ugly gas fireplace with glass cover

I don't know much about this at all and the decorators out there want $$$ so any advice is greatly appreciated!

My gas fireplace turns on and off with a switch on the wall, has a glass cover with an ugly brass colored vent at the top, and externally vents out to the side of my apartment building rather than running up to the roof. The fake logs inside look blatantly fake, not realistic at all. There is grey slate around the fireplace opening.

What I am hoping to do:

1. Replace the slate around the fireplace with something more appealing - marble? stone?

2. Replace the glass which looks very dirty or corroded, I don't think with this type of fireplace I can get rid of the glass totally so I'm just looking to replace it.

3. Put it more realistic looking fake logs

Any ideas? Is ther a name or term for this type of fireplace? Are there any recommended brands or vendors for any of these components? Also, has anyone ever put a stone mantel around a gas fireplace like this?

Any ideas or suggestions would be really wonderful. Thank you!!!

1) not a problem
2) replacement glass is expensive, try rutland products "white off"
3) you cant mess with the logs, the unit is tested and listed with the logs that are inside. they cant be re arranged, they cant be changed they have to be exactly like they are in the manual. If not, all sorts of problems come up. Delayed ignition, sooting, carbon mononixe etc. If you dont like the logs you have to replace the entire unit. The brass trim might be able to be replaced with blak. Look in the bottem control panel, get a make and model. and call the local dealer that sells your brand. Or post it here and i will see what i can find out.

It sounds like you have a full chimney. Why can't you keep the doors closed when the fire place is turned on? I live in a cold climate so just about all of the fire places around here use outside air for combustion and don't need to draw air from the house for combustion which means the glass doors can be closed when the fireplace is being used. If you need to keep your doors open, then you must not use outside air. With kids, the biggest advantage of glass doors is being able to close the doors while the fireplace is in use--at worst they get a burn from the hot glass if they are playing around the fire place and happen to touch it. Screens are much more easily moved or tipped over. As chisue said, another advantage of the doors is (if you can close them while the fireplace is on) that you prevent conditioned air from going up the chimney. Good luck.

Thank you, haus proud. This is definitely more than a cosmetic defect. It's obvious to me that when they installed it that just kept screwing the screen in after it met resistance rather than stopping and seeing what was causing the problem and repositioning the grate and logs. DH is going to talk to the builder tomorrow so I hope all of this comes out okay without a fight. I've had a windshield that shattered when I had a similar ding in it and I don't want to risk something bad happening especially when small children are around. I'm interested in seeing if someone can give you an answer on your pilot light and mildew question. We are in Florida and another question I have had is about our pilot light which seems to be set on a very high setting with a visible flame. The glass screen also is always warm just from the pilot light. I was thinking we should just turn it off as you did to save energy but now it looks like I should rethink that idea. Maybe I can find some way just to turn it down. Good luck with your problem.

I drew this to help myself visualize--my thought was to center the hutch/oven build out on the wall and then use uppers to balance the window on the other side. I think this is what you were saying? Thinking I will shorten the island on the dishwasher side by a few inches and do a waterfall countertop over the short edges. That way I can get rid of the build-out over those sides and neatly cover it off, while making the dishwasher area feel a bit less cramped. What do you think?

Looks like you need to demo the whole thing to the fire box, then build it much smaller so you can balance the built in with ease. I would assume you will want a tv to the left side? in that case it would be ok, or make sense for the left side built in to be larger. As to Code, you really need to ask a contractor in your area what those laws are.
