ding in glass screen for gas fireplace

Our Lennox gas fireplace has a glass screen that was apparently shoved against the points of the log grate when it was installed. One place has a ding in the glass where it was pressed against the grate. Should we be worried that this is a hazard similar to having a ding in a windshield? I want to call the builder to have them reposition the whole log assembly as it is easy to see that it is touching the glass screen and even if this touching is not a hazard it doesn't look right. But, while I'm making that request should I ask them to replace the screen or am I making a mountain out of a molehill? Or should I try just try to reposition the whole log assembly myself and not worry about the ding? Thanks for the help.

I do not know if the ding will worsen, in which case you will have to replace the glass. Since it is brand new, your warranty should cover a replacement. You might want to discuss the matter with your installer -- the manufacturer's warranty should probably cover the cost, so it should not matter to the installer.

If the glass is touching the grate, there is definitely a risk that, when the grate gets hot, it will cause further damage to the glass.

If the ding is a tiny cosmetic defect, it might not be worth bothering to replace it, but you should definitely reposition the logs and/or grates so they do not touch the glass.

Thank you, haus proud. This is definitely more than a cosmetic defect. It's obvious to me that when they installed it that just kept screwing the screen in after it met resistance rather than stopping and seeing what was causing the problem and repositioning the grate and logs. DH is going to talk to the builder tomorrow so I hope all of this comes out okay without a fight. I've had a windshield that shattered when I had a similar ding in it and I don't want to risk something bad happening especially when small children are around.

I'm interested in seeing if someone can give you an answer on your pilot light and mildew question. We are in Florida and another question I have had is about our pilot light which seems to be set on a very high setting with a visible flame. The glass screen also is always warm just from the pilot light. I was thinking we should just turn it off as you did to save energy but now it looks like I should rethink that idea. Maybe I can find some way just to turn it down. Good luck with your problem.

We're planning to put a Montebello See though direct vent on our Deck wall (backing to the interior family room). As renovator said they make an indoor/outdoor one that while pricey, is designed for just that application. There are actually a number of brands that now have this, Heat n Glo, Majestic, Montessan. Speaking from my in person experience of the Montebello showroom model, the outdoor side with the outdoor window kit (which makes this useable on an outside wall) is more for ambience not heating. We could really feel the heat radiating off the ceramic interior face of the FP but when we popped outside to check out the view of it burning didn't feel much heat at all. It hadn't been running too long however. Might still work well for supplying heat to a screened in porch if the area is left open to the interior side of the FP which it sounds like wouldn't be too hard to do in your application.

Not sure what type it is, could be a "B" vent and they are useless for putting out any heat. Vent free's are outlawed in some cities, and many codes prevent them from being installed in bedrooms and sometimes bathrooms (CO). The best type of fireplace is the "Direct Vent" In most cases you can identify these as they have a "Double wall Tube" coming out of them, either from the top or the back. The actual combustion chamber is completely sealed on a direct vent. It draws the air it needs from the outside portion of that tube, and exaust the combusted products through the inside part of that tube, thus the outside part of the tube stays cool and these type of fireplaces can be installed "virtually anywhere" Unfortunately even things here , with direct vent fireplaces are not that simple. There are some made, (Usually larger ones), that throw out little heat--they are rated for "entertainment" or some fool thing!!! The ones that throw out the heat are rated as a heating appliance, and throw out heat , they do. We have a Valor and it heats the whole downstairs of our 2700 sq ft house. Fortunately, it has a hand held remote, as well as a thermostat mode, that will adjust the flame up/down as needed to keep the room (or wherever you have that remote), to the desired temperature. I wish someone would answer you, I was going to post something similar myself. We have a contract on a home and I had the chimney inspected today (realtor says I'm the only person in her entire career to have a chimney inspection, but you'll see why) Inspector told me the flue tiles needed to be replaced and the to reline a chimney was about $4K-$5K or could have the tiles that needed to be repaired which iwas about half that price - he wasn't positive on pricing as he does not do this type of work. He actually called me back and the low end pricing from the company gave him a guesstimate of $1500-$2500 depending on what I decided to actually have done. Originally, this was a wood burning chimney and now is gas. I know there was an issue with the damper not opening correctly and was having the owners clean it out before the inspection. Due to the issue above, he didn't do the cleaning - not until we decided what to do about the flue issue. Anyhow, I'm not putting out any more money on the home, it would be the owners who'd have to repair. My realtor called me back a little while later and said the listing agent spoke to the owners and came up with what they think would be a solution - a vent free gas fireplace. Since I'm a Floridian who's never had a fireplace in her life, I know nothing about any of this. I'm trying to find out if what they are proposing, how it differs from the gas fireplace that's there already. Will what they put in look the same as what's there now? They claim it's more energy efficient. I'm glad you are asking the questions you did above because I wouldn't have known to ask them, so I really hope someone knowledgable will answer. In the meantime, I was given the name of a guy who does gas fireplaces for a living. Will try to reach him and if I can , ask those questions and let you know what I may be able to find. If I go with the ventless, I'm still having them clean out the damper. With it not opening all the way, that means cool air is still coming in, and in summer, cool are is going out. Joanie38, We are in the process of putting a direct vent gas fireplace in as well. We went with a Regancy and it's sitting in our living room waiting to be installed this week. We looked at the Excalibur as well. Although I liked both, the Regancy's flame (we purchased the extra ember kit) looked so real to me. GET THE GLASS REPLACED! One flaw in the glass can cause the whole piece to shatter. many times they shatter outward. Please get it taken care of! Also - gas fireplaces are HOT. they produce up to and over 30,000BTU's of heat. Do not let children play around and do not touch. Bad burns can result. If your pilot light is huge, you may need to have a qualified tech come and take a look. The air shutter may need adjusting. but if you don't know what you're doing and start adjusting things on your own, you may wind up with a black sooty mess on your hands.

Thank you, all. The dealer was just here today. He said no question the glass needs to be replaced and is ordering it for us and will replace and install at no charge since his guys made the mistake. He also repositioned the grate and "log" assembly so we won't have this problem again. When he looked at the pilot light he said this was normal and invited us to visit his showroom to see the ones he has on display so I'm feeling better about this. Thanks again.
