Want to replace Vent-Free Fireplace, need suggestions
Comments (1)The gold standard is a gas fired direct vent insert, the safest, most energy efficient system. But it is not an open fireplace. it is a sealed firebox fitted into your existing firebox equipped with two vents that go up the chimney -- one to exhaust the fumes, the other to bring in fresh air from outside to feed the combustion. Indoor air quality is never affected -- hence the safety. And it puts out heat like a blast furnace. You need a remote thermostat that turns the thing on and off to maintain the heat setting. These units are not inexpensive and are not a DIY installation. But they are the best. And many come with a propane adaptor. Unvented system are considered a health and safety hazard and are a vilation of building codes in many communities. Comments (14)cpartist, Yes I will get the info. Right now everyone is working so hard on last minute items that I just want to let them work, knowing I will get all that information when it's all finished. It should only be a couple weeks now. I am so sorry about your situation. You probably don't remember but we were both getting ready to start building around he same time (before the opportunity to buy additional property came up for you). We figured we'd get started in February, but things got held up in permitting, not because of anything that the county wanted changed but because they were inundated with applications around that time, as building has really picked up around here. I was a little disappointed and concerned, but your saga really puts that little blip into perspective. Now, looking back, it seems like it all went so fast and so smoothly. Of course, there are always a few unexpected glitches, but nothing of any real importance and, certainly, nothing like the disaster that you have encountered just trying to get permits! I hope that one day not too far off (I was going to say "soon," but based on your other comments, I know that's not realistic) I will be reading about your building process. You certainly will be prepared when it gets underway!...See MoreNeed help finding vented gas logs for L-shaped fireplace
Comments (0)As part of a livingroom remodel, I converted my wood-burning L shaped fireplace to a gas fireplace. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize until after I had purchased a set of vented gas logs that the logs are not finished on the backside. While the log set looks great from the front, it does not look good or like a real wood fire from the side. The seller of the log set has offered to give me my money back; however, I have been unable to find a log set that is finished on all sides. What kind of vented gas logs do other homeowners who have L shaped or peninsula style fireplaces use? Are there logs that are designed for these types of fireplaces? Any suggestions would be most appreciated....See MoreWood-burning fireplace vs. vent-free gas fireplace vs. NO fireplace
Comments (12)We had wood burning, and while I very much enjoyed the sights, sounds, warmth of a wood burning fire, we converted to gas. I do not miss the dusting, vacuuming, cleaning the fireplace. While we had wood, we were able to cut our own firewood which was a satisfying project at our ages then. I suppose we could still do it now, but cutting, loading, hauling and splitting wood aren't very high on my list of satisfying chores these days - and ordering, buying firewood has become expensive. Truthfully, we don't use the gas fireplace that often. This sprawled out one story house (1955) isn't hard to heat with natural gas radiant in the ceilings. I have the fire going during storms, or for the ambiance occasionally and when expecting winter guests and wanting the house to feel welcoming....See Moreaitram
