Want to replace Vent-Free Fireplace, need suggestions

My house was built 12 years ago, and a builder grade fireplace was installed with a B-Vent since the fireplace is not against an outside wall. We hated the fireplace as it didn't provide any heat, and actually made the whole house much colder. We use propane heat, as natural gas is not available in our area.

Upon the suggestion of a co-worker, I installed a vent-free fireplace and re-tiled the surround. We have had it for about six years now, and have had to have it serviced three times. It sure does kick out the heat, but I just can't stand the smell. When I walk past it when it's off I can smell gas all the time, yet the carbon monoxide detector has never gone off.

The vent-free box and logs were relatively inexpensive, and I completed the whole project including a wireless remote for under $1,000. We have always loved the open look, which is why we shyed away from a closed glass unit. Our fireplace gets heavy use, as one of us lays in front of the fireplace almost every night from Nov - Feb.

I am ready to replace the unit with a vented fireplace. I do not see anyway to install a vented fireplace out the side, as it would have to go thru another room to get to an outside wall, so I think I would have to use the existing B-Vent, up the roof.

My current unit is 36" W x 36" H x 20" D. As I recall, there was more depth available, but I an not sure it is another foot. The most important features to me in order of importance:

- Heating capacity

- Realistic Look

- Safety

- Efficiency

- Price

Can you please offer some recommendations?

The gold standard is a gas fired direct vent insert, the safest, most energy efficient system. But it is not an open fireplace. it is a sealed firebox fitted into your existing firebox equipped with two vents that go up the chimney -- one to exhaust the fumes, the other to bring in fresh air from outside to feed the combustion. Indoor air quality is never affected -- hence the safety. And it puts out heat like a blast furnace. You need a remote thermostat that turns the thing on and off to maintain the heat setting. These units are not inexpensive and are not a DIY installation. But they are the best. And many come with a propane adaptor. Unvented system are considered a health and safety hazard and are a vilation of building codes in many communities. See Consumer Reports discussion about that.

Well You got "one out of three right" (1) install a chimney liner (2) view the fire through a window and (3) gives little heat output. #1 you would probably want to seal around the direct vent intake/exaust (a tube within a tube) to keep the cold air out, but check code requirements rather than my suggestion. #2 Yep ya gotta look thru a window. #3 If you buy the right one, ---One that is rated as a "heating appliance" they throw out tons of hot air. We've had the Valor direct vent fireplace for 5 years now. It heats the whole downstairs of our 2700sq foot house and most the time we have it turned down to less than half full on. (We do live in S Calif thou). This dummy replaced the force air furnace just before we bought the fireplace, The furnace may have been turn on less than a dozen times in those 5 years and then only to heat the upstairs bathroom. From all I've read, Ventless fireplace are NOT recommended by a lotta "Pros", and some States/cities--what have you, are outlawing them. Good luck with whatever decision you make! Gary

You need first to find out the source of the draft. It could be there is an opening in your chimney that brings cold air in from the outside. Some prefabs ae equipped with an outside air intake to feed the combustion. There may be a damper on that intake that can be closed. Aside from that, you should figure out a way to insulate the unit because unless you do that you will not be happy with any improvements you make. You might want to hire a chimney sweep to clean your unit and to ask him questions about it. -- just make sure the person you hire has some expertise on fireplaces. If you have access to natural gas (or propane gas), you should seriously consider installing a direct vent gas insert. They are very energy efficient and safe, and will provide a serious source of heat. Unlike a conventional fireplace in which most of the heat goes out the chimney, with direct vent most of the heat radiates into the indoors, and the unit is sealed, so it does not affect indoor air quality. If you do a search of "direct vent" in this forum, you will find useful information about these systems.

Worth replacing vent-free log set?

I have had American Hearth vent-free log set for close to 10 years now. I can't stand the smell, everyone else in the house can't smell a thing and loves the heat. I have received a couple of quotes on the installation of a Regency direct vent fireplace, and am waiting for one more from an installer that has a good reputation. Gas type is propane. I have had the thermocouple replaced twice now, most recently a couple of months ago, and the guy suggested I clean the logs to help with the smell. I have cleaned them annually, but no difference to me. Before I spend $5,000+ for a new fireplace, is there any merit in replacing the vent-free log set with a newer set? I am wondering if the newer logs have improved over the years?
