Power vent on direct vent fireplace
Comments (3)You only can run 20' horizontal which is the problem. We are actually above ground (full walkout basement) but if we run to the side we vent right outside french doors and onto a porch which has a masonry patio above. There is a box bay for the guest bedroom immediately to the side so we can't go there. We are just a little too far away to run straight back over the guest bedroom because of 6" stud walls and 3" or so of brick . . . My builder is getting conflicting reports from fireplace salespeople about whether a b vent will work. The Isokern folks say theirs will, but the fireplace store says all the ones we have found (which frankly seem to have similar venting requirements to the isokern but just cost less) won't work. The isokern salesperson is saying something about how their system has less heat or something? I can't find anything about that and frankly it concerns me because the other fireplace store's technical guru is finding problems with the b vent installation . . ....See MoreDirect Vent Fireplace: Great Looking/Low Heat Needs
Comments (4)We recently installed a Jotul direct vent gas insert into our 20 year old prefab fireplace. It throws off a lot of heat into our 25 by 15 living room here in North Carolina, and we use it early in the morning and in the evening. We're very pleased with the performance of the system although we have a cosmetic problem with its installation that the installer has yet to fix. Jotul also makes a direct vent gas fireplace that we considered, but we decided against it because we would have had to tear out our existing fireplace, and that seemed like overkill. I would go to the Jotul website and check out the gas fireplace. But I would also hunt on Google for other brands of direct vent gas fireplaces. I think your questions about the right size that you need for that wall where the fireplace will be built are best answered in terms of the appearance, not the performance. Of course, you may need a certain minimum size to get the amount of heat that you want, but once you go over that minimum size, you have plenty of wiggle room to select what will look right. There are plenty of websites accessible from the google search engine. Unfortunately, Consumer Reports does not rate these things by brand like they do refrigerators. So once you have narrowed down your choices to a couple of brands, post another message on this forum and see what people think. Comments (4)You may want to look into Valor fireplaces. They're made in Canada and are a radiant heat fireplace. I was drawn to their extreme variability as far as heat settings. I found that a lot of fireplaces have scorching high, slightly less scorching high, and off. Valor has a lot of flexibility and is able to be fine tuned a bit more on heat settings. I also like the simple look, and chose a very plain insert for my own home. It is being installed tomorrow (yay!), so I can't speak for how well it works yet. Definitely worth looking into though, as they come highly recommended by the multiple installers that I spoke with. Good luck!...See MoreAppalled at the prices of direct vent fireplaces!
