Bretzel roll 'nuggets' as appy/dessert?

I'm on a bretzel roll kick - love those things. Was thinking if they were made a smaller "nugget" size, they could be an appetizer - dip them in different kinds of mustard, fondue cheese - anything else? Or as part of a dessert bar - dipped in cinnamon sugar, chocolate fondue (then maybe even rolled in coconut or something), anything else? Would you ever put dried fruit in them? Is the dessert catagory stretching there usefulness a little too far? I'll be hosting a Bunco group & a book club group soon, and like to have a variety of offerings, which made me think of this. Any thoughts appreciated, thanks!

OOOH!....maybe roll them into small fat "sticks"....make say 20 out of a batch of dough....and serve a sweet hot mustard and a cranberry mustard for dipping.
Don't think I would want fruit in them....but if you make sticks....with salt...imagine dipped in caramel!!

I made a stuffed pretzel bite recipe for a Christmas shindig. Lots of people liked them but I didn't care for them because the taste of baking soda was just toooo much. And I used a lot less soda in the parboiling water than the recipe called for. I wonder if rinsing them off would help get rid of the soda taste?

Also, I had a lot of trouble trying to pinch the dough together so the fillings would stay inside. Most of them came undone when they were cooking even after a lot of fiddling w/ wetting the dough, etc. Of course, that wouldn't be a problem if you just omit the filling. Lots less work, too. Didn't save the recipe but any pretzel roll recipe oughta' work.

We don't fry often either so when we do it almost always has to be fried shrimp. We love fried caulflower too so that often goes with it and some french fries are always good. We use just flour for our coating. I flavor it heavily with garlic powder, onion powder and some salt. I don't use black or white pepper but a bit of cayenne is good too. I just taste the flour with a damp finger to make sure it has some taste. Put wet ingredients in flour and fry. If you want thicker coatings you can dip in egg wash after the first flouring and then flour again before frying.

I had a somewhat similar rule with my dog when I was little. If he came looking at a snack I was eating (not a proper meal at the table--he had very good manners), if it wasn't on the not for dogs list, I'd offer him a piece. He was allowed to sniff as much as he wanted, but if he took it in his mouth, he had to eat it. He was very fond of string cheese. :) No abuse involved. If he dropped it--not spit it out, which once in awhile happened and I figured he really didn't like it and threw it out--just dropped it--I'd point at it. He'd eat it. That was the rule. You can have some of my food if you want to eat it but you can't use it to make a mess on the floor. Having a must taste it once rule is an ongoing and known thing between the child and adult. It can be discussed and evaluated as to whether it's working for the family. One makes allowances. The kid who doesn't like any soup doesn't have to try the new soup. The kid who is really revolted by the appearance beyond a perfunctory "Ew! What's that?" can be given a pass. A lot of times, however, kids (especially under 10) "don't like" foods because they don't like the name, they don't like the color of the dish it's in, the shape reminds them of something non-food they don't like, etc. They're busily trying to process it, and don't have a lot to compare it to. Sometimes, they also will like a dish made with ingredients they don't like, because they like the story that goes along with it. While variety of foods is a really excellent way to eat, there is so much new information bombarding kids daily, that they often enjoy food they know more because of the familiarity, and ease of processing what they're experiencing, and the desire to repeat and reinforce pleasant experiences. Adults are often the opposite--something may seem more delicious than it really is if it's a totally new flavor or combination. That's because almost everything has some kind of familiarity and tasting something new lights up the neurons.

I do birds nests with chinese noodles and melted butterscotch chips. Sort of like "no bake" cookies except with the noodles and butterscotch for a "nest" color. Scoop with ice cream scoop and then hollow out center for nest shape. Fill with a few jelly beans or candy eggs of some other type. Can serve with our without Peep as a side . . . :)

The head marking is hilarious. I first thought a fried egg, (Egglet), then a flower like a 'Daisy'. 'Bullseye' is perfect. One of my favorite YouTube vlogs is Cog Hill Farm. They have a pig named Peaches, an Emu named Nugget, and many others. Adorable family. I've learned so much about chickens from their 10 year old daughter MaryCarl. The standard NewYears day faire here like so many others. Ham, black-eyed peas, cornbread, cabbage. Next day sliders. Lots of soup from ham hock/leek top stock. Ham packets for the freezer...Ham twice a year is just about perfect. Soup season has arrived. Horseradish cream on the sliders Last nights Smoked Oyster Stew was the closest I've ever come to giving a meal a 10+. As well as the appy. Smoked oysters, then under the broiler. 10+. 10++ if I had classic oyster crackers but homemade croutons at the table was equally nice. While I was at it, I smoked two small salmon filets, two pork chops previously SousVide then frozen. (smoked them frozen), and a chunk of frozen Romano from that big wheel. YUM ! I pulled the smoker inside the kitchen door as it was snowing this morning. Smells like a BBQ joint. (not a problem). The chicken last week we smoked longer, two pans. Last night was just 45 minutes, the oysters 30 minutes. One pan. Perfect amount not wanting to 'cure'. Maybe a Smoked Salmon Corn Chowder tonight. Still coin-flipping with so many choices. Our cheese making organic farm friends gifted us some cream cheese. I had planned to make a smoked salmon/chive 'shmear'. For bagels I have in the freezer. Bummer. Could not find it, head scratching NewYearsDay. Found the container in our bed spotlessly licked by a bad pup. 😂 Adore the look on their faces when confronting them with container in hand. Head lowered in shame. Not at all sorry they did it.

I did that! Made mini rolls for Bratwurst slices, mustard and secured with toothpicks. Point of reference, I used a 1Tbsp disher and they were a bit big.

Lindac, those are really great ideas, thanks! Think I'll be heading to Trader Joe's to get their caramel sauce. Don't know that I've seen raspberry mustard, but I would love it, I'll have to look around.
Ci lantro, I haven't noticed the baking soda taste. What fillings did you put in them?

Foodonastump, I didn't see your post before I responded. That's a good idea too. I don't think I've had bratwurst, but I bet chicken sausage and a small hunk of cheese would be really good too! What is a 1 Tbsp disher? Does that mean you used a Tbsp to measure out the size?

Caramel sauce....
1 cup butter
1 cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup cream
Mix and stir in a heavy pan over low heat, when it comes to a simmer....turn down the heat and cook and stir for about 5 minutes until thick...
add generous pinch of salt and 2 tsps vanilla.

Ci Lantro I too am puzzled by you mentioning a baking soda taste. The first time I had the bretzel rolls, I didn't know how they were made and tasted no baking soda flavor. Did you measure the water AND the soda?

Elba--Ham & cheese...what I had on hand. DS needed some finger foods for a party and didn't give me much notice. He got pretzel bites & my old standby, deviled eggs.

I may be sensitive to the taste of b. soda. I'm sensitive to the taste of baking powder, I know. Get along OK using the new Argo baking powder.

Elba - One of these. The Bratwurst I had was pretty fat, fatter than your typical Italian Sausage but 1T was still a bit too much by the time it puffed up.

Yes, thanks again everybody! Lindac my son loves caramel -we might try that recipe tomorrow. Our local Big Y sells some Stonewall Kitchen products - will see if they have the raspberry mustard - if not thanks for the on-line source! Thanks for the other info as well folks; much appreciated!

I made the regular size and the baking soda was an over-powering taste. If I make them again the amount of soda will be drastically reduced.

Elba1, I did the taste test for you. Caramel, milk chocolate and white chocolate.

And the winner is...

I can't decide! LOL

It could be the caramel but then again it could be the chocolate.

I have been on a chocolate making kick lately so I had milk chocolate and white chocolate wafers to melt. The white was a little too thick but I didn't feel like getting the stuff out to thin it out. I knew we would just polish it off with a spoon anyway. The caramel came from the supermarket. I love that stuff.

Refecting on it now a few days later, I think I liked the caramel the best.
