securing stair tread carpet

I searched but didn't find anything on this topic, and can't even find much googling.

What is the best way to secure braided rug stair treads to hardwood stairs? The best advice I saw was non-slip pads with carpet tacks, but aren't the carpet tack heads too big? Will they be visible, or worse, felt by bare feet?

We need these because the stairs are slippery, and didn't want to go all out with a carpet runner just yet because the risers need to be refinished (so didn't want to have to take the carpet up and re-install at a later point).

Advice appreciated.
