foyer - tile or hardwood?

I haven't decided what flooring to do in my foyer area. I will have hardwood to the left in living room and dining room. I will have a powder room to the right that will have tile. The staircase straight ahead will be hardwood. The kitchen is down the hall and will be tile. So....should I run the same tile from foyer straight into kitchen or should the foyer be consistent with living room to the left and staircase and then transistion in the kitchen area. Help!

From a practical standpoint, I'd tile the foyer, since wet shoes/boots would not be kind to hardwood. I'd continue it through the hall into the kitchen, assuming you're planning to use the same tile in the foyer and kitchen.

Our foyer is tile and abuts 3 rooms. 2 are hardwood and one is carpet. The transitions look fine.

weedyacres....sounds like we have a similar plan. I thought the same thing intially...tile easier to keep clean. same tile in foyer, kitchen and into morning room (and powder room and mudroom).I I am worried about transitions but I am sure it will look fine. Thanks...

By the way, I have been following your build...looks great!

Choose a slate that is not flaky, or that has been cut smooth and polished. You're much more likely to get damaged hardwood from small pebbles in shoes and women's high heels than from random flakes from slate.

While the wood would most likely get beat up pretty fast, the thing you would really want to a good floor mat at the door, now with the kids and the dog, along with the snow, and sand and dirt, you will want a big mat, so big it would probably cover up the floor at the entrance. If you're ok with that, and the fact that it still will get beat up quickly, then I say go for it. Tile will hold up better to the variables mentioned. Just remember nothing lasts forever, just a matter of how long or how short you're ok with the wood being pristine.

I actually like the look of tile throughout. it makes the house look bigger and uniform. get a nice matte tile, otherwise you will be a slave to the floor and mopping every minute when u see footprints. also try and get a tile that isn't so light that you will see everything. a grained grey would be a nice color. or even a grained cream depending on the color paint u choose.

Thank you Oak &Broad. I am torn right now because I worry that the floors are too rustic. I am going for a transitional look with a mix of contemporary and traditional elements and a lot of black iron and gold accents, wwhite kitchen, etc. I want the floor to be soft looking but not looking like barn board.

If done properly, the only transition you should have is a caulk joint between the hardwood and tile, as seen both in the foreground of the following pic as well as on the right side:
