Polyurethane Fumes for People & Pets

Been spending lots of time on the Kitchen & Bath forums and our renovation has made it to wood floors! We will be finishing some newly installed hardwood and refinishing the existing hardwood on the entire first floor. Because of space limitations, it will be done in 2 phases, with each phase taking 4 days (one day sand/stain, 3 days of poly).

The contractor has said that we should plan to vacate the house each day they are polyurethaning for 3-4 hours after the poly is applied because of the fumes. My question is this: is it really safe to stay in the house with the fumes, even after the 3-4 hour time period? Also, we have two indoor cats and are wondering if we have to vacate, should we take them with us too? Seems logical that they would have to come with us too.

Anyone who's experienced this? Thanks!
