My Plan to Remodel this Fireplace (pics).

Here is my floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace right out of the 70's. A while ago I painted the brick knowing at some point we would reface/remodel the entire thing. I'm hoping you might be able to answer a few questions I have. I hope to:

1. Convert the opening to a traditional rectangle shape.

-Can this be done properly/safely?

2. Install a traditional, simple white mantel with fluted legs.

3. Build a new stone tiled surround (maybe antiqued/honed black granite).

-will you share pictures of your tiled surround?

-any problems you can see with the tile adhering to the painted brick?

4. Panel over the bottom portion of bricks below the hearth (painted white).

-Should we just clean up and keep the slate slab hearth?

5. Instead of installing drywall above the mantel, we'd like to create a raised panel affect (painted white).

- I would love to see any pictures you have of the same.

Any thoughts, tips, advice, pictures, design ideas you can provide would be wonderful.

Thanks so much!
