My New Southwestern Hacienda Kitchen Remodel is Finished! Pics

It took years in the planning and almost three months to completely gut and remodel our kitchen, but it's finally done . . . and I am soooo glad! Many thanks to all here who helped me with the plethora of decisions I had to make. You saved me time, money and, more importantly, my sanity! With this remodel, we completely changed the kitchen footprint, but didn't add any square footage. Ours is a hacienda-style, all adobe home in the mountains of New Mexico between Santa Fe & Albuquerque. Our goal was to create a kitchen that would give us the Old World look in keeping with the rest of the house but with the modern amenities we need, since we're a family who loves to cook and entertain.

Although the cherry cabs and brick floors do look dark in some of the pictures, in reality, this room faces south and west and is very light and bright with all our big windows. The dark cabs actually are actually very restful on the eyes here. We worked hard to keep our new kitchen beautiful, but not so busy that it would distract from our beautiful mountain views and the artwork we wanted to include in here.

Congratulations on a job well done! You have reason to be so proud and excited- it is beautiful!

I love the way you pulled out the area below the cooktop- possibly to simulate a range. It gives the area more presence and extra landing room as well- what a great idea.

Your plants look happy on your deep windowsill. Your desert view makes me homesick for my time in the mountains.

First of all, thanks so much for the kind comments! It really makes me feel happy that you can't tell it was done on a budget! I've gotten a couple of questions about how this is a budget remodel, so here's how I saved money and a brief price breakdown: Layout - didn't change anything. This is where I saved the most money. When we bought the house I had grand ideas about gutting and starting fresh, putting in double wall ovens, a prep sink in the island, etc....then reality struck and I realized I didn't have the money for that kind of overhaul unless I won the lottery. The layout isn't too terrible. No "work triangle" but overall it works. We kept everything in place. No changes in appliances, plumbing, etc. Cabinets - didn't change them out. Kept old 1989 cabinets and had them painted. I did have professional painters do it, they came in, took off the cabinet doors, drawer fronts and garage door and took them back to their shop and sprayed them in BM Decorator's White. It cost about $1000 to have them do this and come in and paint the side panels in place. Countertops- tropical brown granite - total cost was $4300 installed and that included the stainless undermount sink and tearing out the old counters. That was my big splurge, but it was still cheaper than most of the other granite colors. I figured if I splurged on the countertops it would make the rest of the kitchen look a little more elegant! I searched GW for granite info and found lots of advice that was absolutely priceless, including a great post by Stonegirl that should be bumped to the first page for eternity. Drawer/Cabinet pulls - I got these from Menards, a Midwestern home improvement chain similar to Home Depot but less expensive. Total cost for all of them was under $200. Faucet - got it on sale from a local plumbing supply company - $250 Lanterns above island - Overstock.com - These were only $166 a piece, and I think they also give the kitchen a more glamorous look! Construction work (replacing soffit lighting, taking out fluorescent light box, leveling out island to one level, labor on backsplash)- I hired 2 guys to do the work at $25/hour. I had seen their work before and they worked with the granite supplier/fabricator on many jobs so it was nice that they all had a good working relationship. I saved money by doing the cleanup every night so I didn�t have to pay them to do it. They worked pretty fast and I�m really happy with the work they did. I would definitely hire them again. I think total labor cost was $1500. Backsplash - Daltile Rittenhouse Square subway tile in arctic white semi gloss. I looked up many threads on GW for backsplashes and settled on this because of the classic look and cost! $250 for materials, took the tile guy about 8 hours to do it. Adams Counterstools were from Target.com, not Pottery Barn. I liked the look in the PB catalog but found the lookalikes at Target. I have 2 little boys that are very rough on furniture so I didn't want to spend a lot. Plus, I was on a budget. I think they were $78 a piece. Kitchen table & chairs from Kmart. $229 for table and 4 chairs. Surprisingly, shockingly well-made. Kmart doesn't suck as much as I thought! Appliances- the range was kind of a splurge, it was about $2000. But I cook a lot and justified the expense. Fridge was on sale. Dishwasher on sale as well, it's okay, if I had to do it over again I maybe would have forked over a little more money for a better dishwasher. Apparently Maytag and I have different definitions of the word "quiet". Window Treatment - I think that roman shade from Smith + Noble was about $200. Oh, how I wish I could sew better... Thanks so much everyone for all the nice comments! My primary goals in doing the kitchen remodel were to update the look, improve functionality and to warm up the color scheme using vibrant earth tones for a slightly Tuscan feel. I have been very happy with the transformation. Its amazing how some paint and granite can make such a difference. I had to look up my old notes to find the names of several of our materials used but here is the short list as requested: My Granite is called EL DORADO and is from Brazil. My Backsplash tile is a Mexican Travertine 3x6 Subway called DESERT CREAM IMPERIAL from Florida Tile Kitchen Sink is a Blanco 1-3/4 Anthracite Silgranite Kitchen Faucet is the Lady Grohe Cooktop is the Thermador 30 inch Induction with the Popup Vent system Double Ovens are the 27 inch Kitchenaid Architect Series II Microwave is the GE Profile model PVM2070DM1BB Beverage Center is the MARVEL 15 inch BARM-BB-G with the all black framed glass door Original 20 year old dark cherry cabinetry custom made by Dutch Mills in Goshen Indiana. Under cabinet lighting is Seagull Ambiance Xenon Low Voltage Linear Lighting on dimmers. Kitchen window shades are Graber brand light filtering pleated shades, Lucia model and the color is Elderberry 4050 We used all BEHR paints but some of the colors were custom mixed. The yellow kitchen walls and soffits were a Restoration Hardware color called SAFFRON which we had color matched in the BEHR paint The burgundy accent color used on the kitchen windows and on the powder room walls was BEHRs CURRANT JAM The Sunroom walls were BEHRs WHISPERING PINE The Sunroom Ceiling was a Restoration Hardware color BAY LAUREL that we color matched in BEHR Hallway to laundry was BEHRs CUP OF COCOA Laundry room walls were BEHRs AUTUMN GOLD Regarding the questions about removing the light box over the island. My neighbor did most the remodel work for me. He is a licensed electrician and just removed the wood box frame and fluorescent fixtures. We luckily had an intact drywall ceiling under the light box so it just involved installing new pendant and recessed can lights in the ceiling by repositioning the original wiring from the light box and installing the new fixtures. There was minimal drywall patching required. We upgraded to dimmer switches also.

Your range is not far from an outside wall and probably a duct could be done. That would depend on how you cook and your budget. Some cook a lot with spices or fry up lots of bacon, run their fan frequently and would never consider a ductless vent. I run my fan frequently and find it helps keep grease off surfaces, but that is me. Some people rarely cook on the range top or just don't find a fan important. It is a good idea to look at the little touches mentioned by Studio Boise. If you can live without the cabinet to the right of the window, you could put a set of shelves there or replace the center panels with glass or remove the doors, finish the inside and use as an open cabinet. That is not quite the same as the wood shelves, but might be an imbetween step while you see how you like that area open. Some will say you should not take away the storage - it depends on how much you have elsewhere. I retrofitted a cabinet with a plate rail - I am sure some would feel the space could have been better used as a cabinet, but like you I wanted to add some of my own touches / style. Shelves - like in some of your inspiration pic: This is more farmhouse / cottage: You might be able to use the cabinet elsewhere if you do shelves: Also - like others have said, once you add you own decor touches, the space will feel more like your space. Wow...you did an INCREDIBLE job!!! The SW flair is so different from other kitchens that I have seen. I love how bright and spacious your kitchen is. That area by the cook top is really unique. You did a great job!!!!

Cheri, our builer/GC built a wood frame over the premounted Vent-a-Hood liner he'd already put in/up. He then added some drywall to it. Then an artisan came in, who specializes in these kind of things and carved up the frame and hand-troweled on plaster. There's no paint on this hood; it's all some kind of special plaster that cures into this smooth, beautiful finish. It actually looks different at various times of the day. It's really kind of cool. I hope this answers your question.

Lynn, I've been waiting to see this and it's just fabulous, as expected. It's perfect for your architecture, strong and organic, and the whole perfect in its setting. Your home reminds me strongly of what I miss about the Southwest. Our home in the Nevada desert was a little wood-frame Victorian, sweet but scarcely a match for the magnificent mountains and panoramas that surrounded it. Happy cooking!

Can you tell me about your microwave drawer? How do you like it? Also, one of the photos has a caption that says, drawer underneath the microwave, however it shows a KitchenAid logo on the oven. Do you have two microwaves?

Sweeby: my tile guy and I first decided exactly where I wanted the fireback and he drove heavy duty nails into the wall there to help support it on the bottom. By support, I mean just until the adhesive on the back of the fireback dried. He drove them in quite deeply so that the (small) nailheads wouldn't interfere with the grout or other tile later. He then used a very heavy duty adhesive (one with the consistency of a thick white paste or grout)on the back of the fireback and held it tightly in place on the wall for just a couple minutes. After the adhesive dried, he started placing the 4x4" field tiles around it and worked outwards.
Sherilynn: the microwave drawer is by Sharp. I only have the one microwave. There is a regular drawer (all my cabs are Brookline) under the microwave (drawer) that holds all my MW cookware. I love my MW. As I mentioned in the photo's caption, it has a kind of Blumotion on it for soft opening and closing. It cooks quickly and is very easy to clean. The inside usable dimensions of it are 15 7/8"w x 17 7/8" deep (back to front) and 6" tall. They're available in black, SS and white.

PecanPie, yes, we pulled that cooktop cab and two flanking cabs out 3" more than the rest of the cabs for just that reason, to give it a more separate furniture or range look. We also had them done in a darker stain. In retrospect, I wish we would have gone with black instead of the espresso brown, though. Ideally, I think the difference needs to be more pronounced.

Just for the record, I added all the detail pics of my kitchen because I think it's good to share those ideas. I swear, I probably got 90% of all my ideas here from photos of other completed kitchens. Some I adapted to my own needs, but I'm really grateful for people who took the time to post the good ideas they had. Good ideas need to be passed on!
