I'll be driving past a sad scene tomorrow evening...

Tomorrow evening, I'm heading out to my hometown NW of Fargo to help my Brother celebrate his 50th B-day!!

But...
I'll be driving past a spot where 2 young ND Sisters lost their lives just N of Hillsboro, ND. The weather Wed. was VERY windy & blowing snow across roads, making them kinda glazed for stretches. I've driven I-29 there a THOUSAND times. It's wide-open and level, but slight curves are there. The attached story says they were thrown from the vehicle, so I'm assuming they weren't wearing seatbelts?!

Drive careful out there my GW-Friends!!! Winter's not over yet...

Not tryin' to be a "Danny Downer" here...maybe I shouldn't have posted this.

Just a sobering thought about driving safely.

They pulled his license Saturday until he passes the tests. I don't know how they work the written; if he can walk in any date or what; possible he's taking his time going back to take the written a 3rd time; so they pulled his license for what sounds like temporarily. I don't know why he has not gone back because the guy gave him all of the answers the last time. We haven't talked about it much because he got the letter Saturday; right before the storm. I'm pretty sure he mentioned it had something to do with his body & using the cane. He's now going to consider selling his home. I need to call the Vets home to see about bringing him there to tour it. I also need to find phone numbers to get someone out to his house to help set up transportation. I'm so thankful they pulled it. I can't imagine how many lives that possibly saved with how many accidents he's had. It's been so long; but he's totaled the original car his deceased lady friend picked out when he hit a lunch truck; a similar car that I found for him; plus the rear end was smashed on that 3rd car & I want to say he had a fender bender before the rear collision. Of course he says the other person hit him the other 2 times & I actually wonder if the rear end one was caught on traffic cam because it's located near a huge car business. I've been praying it was caught on traffic cam. He called me last night after I hung up with my son's great aunt who told me about the storm damage in my old area; so he listened to me about that which put a different tone on what he originally was going to say because losing his license is minor compared to what the rest of the state is going through. When he was at my house 2 years ago; I could not get him to listen to me about touring the vets home & getting his affairs in order & now he's kicking himself. He was in no shape emotionally due to losing his lady friend; then he was hurt that he had to come to my house to recover instead of going to his niece's. He's been so hurt about that; that 2 years later he still can't drop it. I hope the loss of license is enough to wake him into reality.

plllog -- yep, reset the bookmark, and it seems to be working. In the olden days, you know, last week, I only signed in when I wanted to post (laughable, I know, like I'm actually privatizing my forum trail and someone cares) and I could just use That Home Site Forums - Gardenweb menu to look at Kitchens, Cooking, etc. If I want my topics now, I have to sign in; otherwise, I'm sent to the Garden Forum. It makes sense signing-in, I get it, but I just need to grumble a bit. And I'll whisper: this change and not knowing what the end of net neutrality is actually going to mean, makes me want to grumble, grumble, grumble a bit more:) On a positive note: I thought I was too old to learn new tricks; yet, a new talent that I've acquired is filtering out the peripheral, intrusive, embedded nonsense on the sides, top and bottom of my screen/phone. Yep, I only water "new implants",and last time I was there I did test the soil with my moisture-reader of a couple of them, and the soil still registered as "moist" ,so I haven't yet started watering. In any case, this year there's only 15 new ones,since I could only start gardening after Christmas, due to the hip operation. What's more, I do have quite a lot of water stored up out there; it's just that, as a principle, I like to always replace the water that I use as much as possible. But these past 2 years have been so hard: last summer, since I was doing chemo, I had to break my rule and use water without replacing it,my water-catching rooflet fell down, and un-wisely, I put off filling up one of my 5 big water tanks-I didn't forsee my car having problems. So, things are far from "desperate", lol-it's just frustrating. For at least this up-coming week, I may have to avoid trying to go out there;the forecast is so bad! extreme heat, no favourable wind (for me, favourable is south-west ; makes it bearble temperature-wise and keeps the mosquitos, flies, etc away). Among my future projects is to build myself a sort of gazebo, so I'll have a place to sit in the shade and just look. Also adding trees, though it's tricky. The view is so beautiful, and I don't want to block it too much, but it is towards the south-west . So I am trying to guess spots in which I can put trees that won't block the view completely, yet will provide some protection from the afternoon sun. But I get so little morning sun, and I don't want to block that. I'm also trying to think of ways to shade the roads that I must use to get down to my garden. For the main one I'm going to try to plant tall -growing climbing roses that I can train over rebar bent to form arches, in the hopes to create a sort of rose tunnel. On another path, within the garden,I've decided to not replace the roses that I removed -they were doing so poorly!-and instead put in a redbud or two. I've got 2 wisterias planted that I'm hoping will help shade the entrance gate as well. Gotta build support structures for these things, though...so much to do! but for now it's best that I just sit tight, and try to be patient.

It's a great reminder, especially for parents with young drivers. I have 2 daughters in their 20's and I worry constantly about them driving in hazardous conditions, well, just driving... period. They must learn to drive in bad conditions but it doesn't hurt to relay experiences and news stories. Thank you for the somber reminder. So sad for those young girls.

So sorry for the sad news.

It's funny how you can be reminded of tragedies every time you go by a stretch of road.

Thirty years ago, there was a cop chasing 6 teens piled into a truck...the truck missed a curve by an intersection and 4 of the teens were killed, 2 injured. There was a lot of criticism around the chase and it changed the police policies around high speed pursuits. And they added a stop sign at that intersection. Every time I stop there, I still remember the tragedy.

There's another road nearby that haunts me every time I go by. Over 35 years ago, a little 8 year old girl left her home at 6 pm to walk up the street to visit a friend. She never came home. She was bludgeoned to death not 300 yds from her home. The case has never been solved.

Such sad stories. There are three spots I drive by where teenagers died in car crashes, at about the time when my sons were teenage drivers. I always think how their parents must miss them so much to this day. There's also a spot where my older son flew around a curve, went off the road and hit a tree, landing him in the ICU for two weeks. I cringe whenever I go by there. That was nearly thirty years ago.

It's amazing how these locations of sad events can affect you, even if you were not part of it at the time. I was driving through Connecticut a couple months ago and drove by exit signs for Sandy Hook and Newtown, and waves of sadness came over me, remembering what had occurred in that area.

And now I read a headline from about a crash near Sleepy-Eye, MN....110 mi. W-SW of Mpls.

FOUR teens killed. "Less than ideal conditions" our newspaper says. I WISH stuff like this could stop, but...

Faron, that's in my neck of the woods. Not my town, but close enough that I know some of the volunteer firefighters that responded to the accident. It's been rough.
