Are our Alabama posters all okay (tornados) . . .

I didn't realize until just now that Alabama had been hit. We had a tornado touch down less than a mile from us - and didn't even know it until mid-morning!! We woke around 5:00 to heavy rain (not for long) and lightening, etc. but nothing major. SEveral hours later I heard the lowest category twister had touched down near us. Another one (also lowest category) about 30 miles or so from us. No major damage - thank goodness. Yesterday another TN community - very near one of our favorite state parks was hit. This weather has been wild!! 70's the last few days, cold front coming in after the storms - 50's tomorrow, Sunday and flurries predicted for Monday! LOL highs in the 60's again Tuesday. What a wild ride.

I hope everyone is okay and had no damage. . .

It sounds like this afternoon is going to be a scary time for a lot of people in the midwest. I hope everyone stays safe. I don't live anywhere near a tornado area but I can't imagine anything more unpredictable weather-wise.

That was a couple of hours north of us this morning. Our storm is due here any time... but the sun is still shining and the wind seems to have calmed down now, so who knows.

I am English and of modest means but I absolutely loved the Royal Wedding and all the pomp and pageantry that went with it. If anyone could not feel proud to be British that day, then I feel they must be missing something in their lives, I'm not sure what. I think the Royal Family are incredibly inexpensive to the country when you consider what they bring in through tourism and prestige. I'd rather pay extra for their presence and maintaining the status quo, than for all the benefit scroungers, health tourists, support for migrants who don't integrate, binge drinkers and anti social behaviour which must cost the country a fortune, with little in return. Heaven help the U.K. if we ever ditch the Monarchy and become just another boring backwater of republican western Europe. There's no such thing as equality and there wouldn't be under a republic either. I prefer the richness of the aristocracy and I think Britain holds it's place in the world politically, socially and economically, not to mention militarily, because we have the Royal Family. I don't care for all of them, but as an institution they are a valued treasure and must be maintained. I loved the way Miss Middleton bowed her head at the required moments out of respect. I feel a bit sorry for her in a way, what she's letting herself in for, for the rest of her life, but yes, for many of us thankfully, it was a glorious day and I'm so glad to hear that so many in America and elsewhere, enjoyed it all as much as we did. I am very proud of it and do so without feeling in any way inferior to any of them, just appreciative that we have this here.

Hope every is safe and sound tonight. We just have crazy winds here right now but not expecting anything worse. Daughter got home safe for spring break-got out of Oxford shortly before they had tornado sirens go off. Hope everyone is ok.

Basements are not rare in my area of the south (TN). Many, I would even venture to say most, homes here have a garage, but many houses have basements. This is our third home and we have had a basement in each house. On this and the last house we had a basement with a garage on the main (living) level. First house was combo garage/basement. Jane - there was some damage in Knoxville, but I'm about 30 minutes from there. That's where I work and where my dad and my sister and her husband live. We had about 40 windows out of the building where I work (college campus) and lots of downed trees, limbs, etc. My sister had a couple of storm windows broken as well as hail damage to one vehicle. My dad did FINALLY get power back on Friday evening (was without for 5 days), only after a neighbor called and complained that she had felt sick after breathing fumes from the ruptured transformer on their property. Within 30 minutes there were 6 trucks and just a bit later from another area, a special truck and crew that removed the transformer and dug up soil around it. Scary. My dad and others on his end of the road have wells - so water has been tested. This is a small county road - only 8 houses - all with acreage. Those further back from the main road have wells. Thanks for asking. My brother is in Ft. Oglethorpe, GA which is close to Cleveland and Chattanooga and he and his wife were quite upset at the amount of damage. She did her graduate work at Lee University in Cleveland and they lived there before moving to Ft. Oglethorpe. tina

Just as an aside re: age and forever homes. My husband and I built our dream home when we were in our mid and late 20's. We spent a year designing it and 18 months building it. It is a 4500 sq.ft. center hall colonial with an 1100 sq. ft. finished basement. At the time we heard a lot of these same criticisms, it's too big, wait until you have kids, this won't be your forever home, it's too much to maintain, no one needs a house that big, etc. I have now lived here for almost 18 years. I absolutely *love* this home and have no intention to sell until we retire (I am 43 now). Yes your family changes, we now have an 11 year old son, but your house will change along with it. (Ex: we converted a room into a play room for him when he was younger and needed it, we built a huge bar and entertaining kitchen in the basement, we have completely replaced all the floors in the house to hardwood, we have a completely new kitchen etc.) It was my dream home then and it's my dream home now. So many blood sweat and tears have gone into this house, I simply can't imagine living anywhere else!

My sister lives near Branston, MO. and thankfully the tornado missed her. I'll take Earth Quakes any day over tornados. Stay safe everyone!

And I'm glad you are safe. The weather certainly has been wild lately, but after experiencing a major earthquake and a major hurricane all in 1 week last August, nothing surprises me anymore. I may take you up on that email. But not now, have to get the kids to bed and get ready for a 24 hour shift tomorrow, and I'm still recovering from Strep throat! Yikes!

Still lots of rain here about 25 miles south of Birmingham, around 11:30pm cdt. We've been lucky, as the worst storms tend to pass both north and south of us.

We are currently in Lexington VA and the snowstorm caught up with us ! We spent the weekend in the mountains an hour north/west of Asheville NC. It started with flurries as we left there yesterday afternoon. They followed us and we may not be able to get out of the motel parking lot at 9 AM to go see the baby !

I am glad all are OK. Have been out of touch so long . Will have to get caught up when I get some down time . c
