Fishing Frying Question

My husband loves his fish and my Brother-in-law keeps him quite well supplied both summer and winter. I eat some, but am "picky". In the summer Hubby fries his in the garage using an old electric fry pan as I HATE the smell of fish in the kitchen! Even with the exhaust fan going full speed, that odor seems to linger. Does anyone have any ideas how to cope with this smell or just endure it? He uses vinegar in the sink,,,,,,but then the sink captures the vinegar smell. Oh, woe is me!

Change the filter on your exhaust fan.....and have him just pan fry in a little bit of butter....

Try the Neutra-air unscented spray, it really does kill the airborne odors without a flowery overlay!

Or try burning a candle, I only buy one kind of candle from a hippie couple in sugarloaf ny, they only make one fragrance its just *clean* and anyone who has smelled it in my house has asked for their contact info. I order the pillars by the dozen.

Hi, we have had several family fishfrys. We usually have anywhere from 75-100 or more there. We do the fish and I make the bakedbeans. Mom used to make creekbank pots. We had 2 5gal buckets, one with tea and one with lemoade. But now we just tell people to bring drinks(2 liters) and we have one of those big coffee pots also. That's usually a must. But we hold ours in and air cond. building. One yr. we had kareoke(sp). I buy the paper plates( the 4 section ones from the $$ store)and the forks,spoons and cups and napkins. I ask the other people who are coming to either bring a veg. or desert. I also get bread and tartar sauce(but you could ask someone to bring these things). We usually have ours in oct. So one yr. i had gourds and made little fall votives for the tables. Alot of the guest took home the decorations. When we dececide to have one i start getting things early. You can get most things at the $$ store. I also got fall plastic table clothes at a party place or wal-mart. I hope this helps. I hope your mom really enjoys the day....

I generally use cast iron. Gotta be deep enough to hold a decent amount of oil, and the thermal retention properties of cast iron keeps the temp of the oil from dipping too quickly when you add the fish. (But don't fill the pan up at once with fish; add the fish a few at a time so the temperature doesn't plummet. If the temperature goes down too much, the crust won't 'set' and it will instead become a sponge for all the oil. Yuck.) And as an added bonus, deep frying stuff is a great way to season (or enhance the seasoning on) cast iron. Another very good way to fry fish is to use an electric frypan, if it's deep enough. These have a thermostat that makes keeping the right temperature a snap. Just thinking: you don't see those electric skillets as much as you used to. In the sixties, everybody seemed to have one on the counter.

The fish are so small and immature that it could be a while before anyone can say if they are koi or what kind they are, because so many species look alike at that size. The will need a filter at some point to keep the water clean but could be easily sucked though an intake and killed by a power filter. I would suggest a sponge bubble filter. Their ultimate color will depend on what species/variety they turn out to be. If they are shiners they will remain mostly silver although less clear. Of course if they are koi, as you hope, they will change color as they age, but it could be years before they reach their full color potential. .

Never thought about the filter, think I just wash mine. Candle and airfreshner, good ideas. Yes, some air freshner's just scent the air and really don't remove odors. Thanks again!

I keep a vinegar and water mixture in a spray bottle. It removes odors without leaving any lingering sweet smell in the air. The vinegar odor dissipates quickly. X-O works well too to neutralize odors. I quit burning candles 2 or 3 years ago and those heated melted wax things give me a headache.

A little bit of bleach in a spray bottle with water is great for washing up the sink and counters. It should remove the smell.

Now, let's talk about the fish itself. If it is good fresh fish it should not have a bad smell. Perhaps your husband needs some better product to cook with? :)
