I use a britta.....and the price depends on how many you buy at a time...think they are about 6 or 5 dollars....

I used to use the pur filter that you put on the faucet until we bought our new house and have a more visible faucet. I don't remember how much they cost but the best price was at Walgreens. I now use a britta and it functions much better than the one I used 15 years ago. That old one took over an hour to filter the water. Maybe it was the water, maybe the filter, I don't know.

I have bought them at the grocery store for DM before she passed. I didn't notice the price.

I'll get them at Wally World if I absolutely have to. It is one of the few stores here, but I'd rather get them at my grocery, if I can. I refuse to set foot in BB*B again though.

If you haven't bought the pitcher yet, I was about to buy one of them till I read their boxes. They just don't take out enough impurities to make it worth the money. It was like, seriously, why bother.

Now we're looking into the Zerowater pitcher that Target carries. They advertise that their's takes out ALL impurities. I'm just not sure where to go to get all the facts about these tests.

These filters, and the filters on fridges do nothing more than potentially make the water taste a little better, but don't remove any real 'contaminant'. They are usually just variations on the carbon filters.

If you want true filtration of all impurities then you need a reverse osmosis filter. This is expensive and you end up wasting about 5-8 gallons of water for every gallon you get. This will leave you with pure H20, but generally just isn't worth doing.

If you just want to improve the taste of your water (maybe) then these filters might be OK, but if you are concerned about the non H2O stuff in your water, the quick, inexpensive filters remove none of that stuff.

We use a Britta at work, but the general consensus is that it does nothing to improve the tasty of the nasty water!

We've used an electric 1-gallon water distiller for over 25-years to make sure our drinking water doesn't contain Rx drugs and farm-related chemical contaminants.

You'll find the faucet- and pitcher-type filters are only as good as how often you change the filters, which most people neglect. Plus, they don't remove nearly as much contaminants as water purifiers do (distilling, reverse osmosis, and a Berkey).

I was at Target today and remembered this thread so got the booklet out of a ZeroWater box and on the last page it says the rated service life of the filter is 22.5 gallons, so you do the math. You will find a link to the filter life below. Depending on the condition of the water you filter will determine how long your filter will work.

Trsinc, One year of fighting with them over store rebates. Finally had to report them to the other BBB (Better Business Bureau.) They then claimed to
a) that they had switched rebate procesing companies and so could I re-send it.
b) they never have gotten the form, even though I had been emailed two confirmations that they received it (with identifying info on the email to show they did have MY rebate form.)
c) that I put the wrong address on the form. (Nope.)
d) that they mailed the check, but it had been returned because I had "obviously moved" since sending the form. (Nope.)
e. that they had mailed it, but didn't know why I had not recieved it (twice)
f) that I had not included the UPS code.

I had made photocopies of the claim form and all the docs before mailing the rebate form. I sent everything to the BBB, who said BB&B was telling them that they had everything they needed and "didn't know why" I had not been SENT the rebate.

I finally got the check a year later....with my name spelled incorrectly. So I deposited it, only to have them stop payment on it, incurring a returned deposit fee from my bank.

I was already annoyed with them for having really surly and ill-trained staff at our location, but that was the final straw. I wouldn't go in one now if they were giving merchandise away.

I'm more interested in taking out chlorine and improving the taste than getting absolutely pristine water. The PUR is rated at 40 gallons...still not much, but better than 22 gallons.

Justaguy, Yeah, I had an RO system several years ago. Definitely made the water drinkable, but it is wasteful. Considering what our water bill is now (yay for high desert living), there is no way in h#ll I'm going to put anything in that wastes 7 or 8 gallons of water for each one I get to drink. Our water bill is already as much as the electric bill. Water is my primary beverage, so even if all the pitcher did was get that weird Clorox+dirt taste out of the water, it would be worthwhile for me.

WOW!! That's crazy! I mean about BB&B. Wow. I'll never buy anything with a rebate from them now, that's for sure. I don't go there often but it's one of the few choices in my neck of the woods for certain things.

Unfortunately that is sometimes the scam of the mail in rebate. Fulfill some, but not others. This equals profit. Of those unfulfilled a large percentage won't even remember they sent in for a rebate. Easy money.

It's not dissimilar to gift cards. Give a store $50 for a $50 gift card to give as a gift and a certain percentage of recipients will simply never use them. Free money for the store.

When I shop I refuse to take 'mail in rebate' into account when determining the best value. I just figure the MIR will never arrive. If it does then BONUS, but I don't make purchase decisions based upon them.

If a store was being legit they would just subtract the price at the time of purchase and that would be that.

When was the last time you saw a MIR at Walmart? Not trying to paint Wal-Mart as the greatest store ever, but they simply do not play that silly game. MIR, to me are like those TV ads that say, get this item now for just $9.99 and then you read the fine print which says 'plus $20 for shipping and handling'.

We live in a digital/electronic/computerized age. The idea of having to mail in a snail mail letter with photo copied receipts and then wait weeks if not months is the way things worked in the 1970s. These days it usually is not worth the time to play the unnecessary game.

I looked at these water filters but none of them removed iron (or at least they don't say they do), which is what I have too much of in my water. I did get a filter that fit into the spout of the 5 gallon water bottle, but it took FOREVER to filter, so I gave up on it.

I use Poland Spring water now. Since they stopped delivery in my area, I have to buy the 2 1/2 gallon bottles and fill my water bottles/crock myself!?

I use a britta pitcher. I'm mainly interested in removing the chlorine taste from our water and it does make water taste better. I have a device that came with filters a few times that keeps track of the times it has filtered and when it reaches the far side I know I have to change it. My RO filter got clogged with the hardness in our water and started making a horrible noise so we took it out. I think distilled water takes out all the minerals which should be replaced somehow. Costco also carries the Britta filters, we've had no problem finding them.

Just to be clear, I didn't buy the item because of the rebate. I'm not that gullable. I was going to purchase the item anyway, and my two options for it were WalMart and BB*B with identical shelf prices. It was a $40 rebate, so I was willing to spend a little time chasing it, but after a while, they simply p==ssed me off and I wanted to get it out of them one way or the other.

One of the jobs I used to have included handling ALL the rebates for the entire US division of the company. This was on top of my "regular" job. The whole time I argued that the MIR system was archaic and inefficient, but as Justaguy says, they count on people not wanting to bother with a cumbersome mail-in process. Still, my turnaround from recieving the claim to getting the check mailed was, on average, 16 business days. If I can do that while still doing my primary job, I would think a rebate center that does NOTHING but rebates can get it out in equal or less time. (BTW, BB*B doesn't process their own rebates, they outsource the fulfillment process. They also get the funds for the rebates from the manufacturere, often as merchandise credits. Doesn't change the fact that they sponsor the rebates and are ultimately responsible for the program. But it makes it very convenient for them to blame any problem on this other company. Nobody's driving the bus.)

I try not to shop WalMart. As a former indy business owner, I don't like their effect on small communities or mom-and-pop businesses. Unfortunately, they are a necessary evil around here. If I could drive, I could probably avoid them, but that's not an option.
