Watering. To water or not to water? Soapbox.
Comments (23)Fortunately, we're a little less than an inch behind our normal rainfall here. And I seem to be situated in a narrow "weather belt" where if there's a rain producing cloud going over, I'll get it. It can be bone dry a few blocks in any direction. The downside is that it works the same for snow - in an event I can get 2 feet whereas others get a dusting. With Lake Superior as our greatest resource, we rarely have water restrictions. However, the hint is always there to practice conservation, if for no other reason than it's the right thing to do and because all of the lakes are below their normal levels. I know there's an ongoing attempt by thirsty areas west of the Mississippi to construct pipelines and drain off Great Lakes water. Luckily, Canada has a vested interest in this not happening too. Perhaps in the more arid regions, there should be a moratorium on swimming pools? More education on the use of native plants?Well, end of rant. Gardening should be a joyful exercise and I feel for those of you suffering with the angst of watering woes....See MoreWater, water, water everywhere 4 pics
Comments (12)I'm just glad the nearest river is 6 miles in one direction and the next closest is 13 miles in another. Our flooding is all overland! ANy little creek or low spot is filled and overflowing pronto! DD and the boys got a reverse 911 call last night to inform them of two roads closed in her town. She lives 6 miles away from where she works, now has to drive a 30 mile detour to get to work, school and daycare because of washed out roads. The weather man assures everyone the water wont go down too fast because our ground is so saturated with the heavy rain we had last November, before we got this ton or two of snow! So it is slow going....See MoreWater Pressure coming from both water lines inside water heater room
Comments (6)I have the water heater completely disconnected and hoses running from the pipes sticking out of the wall. The hoses run down into the washing machine. When I turn the main water line on water comes out both pipes at the same pressure. This has nothing to do with a water heater. Since the pipes are inside the wall I cannot check them for a crossover pipe. The last water heater was in 2012 and I don't remember having any problems with that tank type heater. In 2012 I added a tankless water heater and it never worked right. So I decided that I wanted to change back to a tank water heater. As a test and trying to remember which line coming out of the wall was the inlet, I put hoses on it and put them down in the washing machine and turn the water on to see which one produce the Water. Surprise, they both shooting water at the same high pressure. There is the problem....See MoreWater, water, water...
Comments (10)To me, flood plains (not planes) are somewhat different from other natural disaster-prone areas. Flood plains flood, that's a certainty. Other places may have a risk of natural disaster but with a lower level of likelihood than having too much water on a flood plain or in lower lying areas. To answer the question you posed but not to me - when people choose to live in certain places - low lying or poorly drained areas, or along the banks of a river or by a beach, or in tornado country - they can't ignore that they're subjecting themselves to risks of loss or injury that can be expected to occur with greater likelihood than if they lived elsewhere. I'm sympathetic about any human suffering but less so in these cases where the damage causing event was one that has happened before, could be expected to happen again, and yet knowing that their choice of location put them at risk. I agree completely with function's second paragraph....See Morekec01
