This is not helping my self-esteem

I really do try. I try to follow recipes exactly, especially the first time I make something.

Southern Living tests their recipes...right??? I just made a recipe for Toasted Oatmeal Cookies and they spread out like dinner on the ground. Lots of cookie crumbs that are a very good topping for ice cream etc. What didn't crumble are very crisp.... and thin as crackers, but taste great.

Question is....where did I go wrong? This is the recipe:

Toasted Oatmeal Cookies

3/4 C butter or margarine (I used butter)

2 cups quick cooking oats, uncooked

1 C firnly packed brown sugar

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extravt

1/2 C all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 Cup coarsely chopped pecans

Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat, cook until lightly browned, stirring occasionally. (Be sure you do not burn butter),

Add oats and cook, stirring constantly, 5 minutes or until oats are golden. Cool.

Combine sugar, egg, and vanilla in a large bowl.

Combine flour and next 4 ingredients, stir in toasted oats. Add to sugar mixture, stirring well.

Drop dough by rounded teaspoonfuls 3 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheets.

Bake at 350 degrees for 12 minutes or until golden. Cool on cookie sheets 5 minutes, remove to wire racks to cool completely.

Yield 3 1/2 dozen.
