I'm making beef stew... have a question!

I've never made beef stew before, but I thought I'd wing it. The thing is the tomato sauce has gone weird on me. I had two 15 oz cans in the pantry for a few months... they weren't due to expire for a year and a half. Well, as soon as I poured them in the pot with the other ingredients, I noticed that they smelled really acidic... not like normal tomato sauce. The cans were not dented at all before I used them.

The soup has been simmering for an hour and it still smells really strong and there are bright orange bubbles around the sides of the pan. Whatever can the matter be? I hope I don't have to throw out a whole pot of stew!
